What Does Ty Law move mean for Elam?

Now that Ty Law has been signed by the Jets, and many have suggested he will play Safety for us, what does this mean for Elam? He has made HUGE plays the past 2 weeks and there is no way i can see him not starting Thursday. Am I missing something?

Maybe Law will play the nickle

Law will play both S and CB. I still think we'll see him more at CB, especially if Elam continues to play like he has the past two games. We have no depth at the position either way, S that is.

Drew Coleman is not good enough to play nickle in the NFL. Also, I guess they are done with Justin Miller. No way he can play as well as Elam. Its nickle for Law. I thought he was awful last time around for the Jets - penalties, guessing, no run support. I am amazed that this is the best the Jets can come up with. I hope he proves me wrong.

I don't know why mangini thinks he has to come up with anything. NE scored 19 points in the first game and did not complete a pass over 14 yards. And this Jets defense and overall team is much better than the Jets team in week #2.

This move makes no sense.

Maybe Mangini needed a Pat-days security blanket for his confrontation with Bill. Hopes Ty might pull a rabbit out of the hat. Law had 10 INTs for the jets but I did not think he played great. Still, that opportunistic streak of his might come in handy the next two weeks.

The Jets are dropping into this little cover 3 look a lot on long passing downs. Revis was back deep once or twice against the Rams. Not that you get a player just for that but I could see Law fitting in well there.

And as impressive as Elam has been he still seems better suited to the run. Last year that is what they needed. But since we have DL and LB that stop the run now they can let the DBs just worry about the pass -- crazy concept I know.

Law has a knack for the interception which could be good and bad. Anyone see Assante Samuel against the Giants on Sunday night? He kept breaking for the ball a few seconds late. It is dangerous.

The bottom line is this probably means less playing time for Elam. But that isn't a bad thing. Elam has had an incredible two weeks so he won't be forgotten. He will get on the field plenty (Eric Smith is another story). More depth = ALWAYS a good thing.

I have a hard time believing Law will have any impact at all in this game. I doubt he is in football shape and he still will need to learn the playbook regardless of his familiarity with Mangini. If anything he will get some serious reps against Tenn

I don't think this is some sort of panic move for this Thursday against the Patriots. I think this is a move for further down the season.

The Jets stop the run. The get to the QB. If they want to play it safe on defense they can avoid getting burned deep. The biggest weakness on defense is getting picked apart underneath (ah, crossing patterns, lol).

Signing Law makes them better. It gives them flexibility. If Lowery plays well he can keep the # 2 CB spot. As long as they don't hand anything to Law that he doesn't deserve this will only make the team better.

some good stuff by Max in this thread...I think Law comes in at the Barrett position..he's been floating around waiting on short crossing routes-it's almost a hybrid position of LBer/CB/Safety and Drew Coleman, as much as I like him and have rooted for him just isn't that good

Im not quite sure why you are suprised this is the best they can come up with. Its week 11, there aren't alot of folks on the street who can come in and even have a chance of playing. Its not like he is supposed to be a savior or anything. just another able bodied corner.
