flgreen
whatchu talkin' bout willis? There was a clause in the trade deal, that the Jets would receive a 4th round pick in the 2008 draft. It would elevate to either a 2nd or 3rd in the 2009 draft. The condition was that Vilma had to resign with the Saints, or the 2008 4th was all they get. As yet he has not resigned. To my knowledge they are not even talking. Of course that could change after the season. Vilma is having a good season. He might want to test Free Agency. Then zilch for the Jets

Sacks ain't his forte . Look at probably the greatest KB the last 10 years, Ray Lewis. He has a sack or 2 a year. that's it. His job is to be a tackling machine, of which he is the best. aec4
You know the funny thing? If Vilma resigns with the Saints, it costs them a 2nd rounder this year (we give them a 4th rounder for it, because we're paying back the 4th rounder we got last yr if we get the 2nd). The funny thing is they traded a 2nd and a 5th for Shockey. If Vilma signs, WE get the second, and the Giants get the Saints 1st. ... So if the Saints resign Vilma is costs them a 1st, not a 2nd (they've already spent the 2nd), even though the Giants get the 1st, not us. If he does not resign, we do not get anything else (we do not give up the 4th either), and the Giants get the 2nd....

The interesting thing is, the Jets could still resign Vilma as a FA, and still keep the 4th. Of course that won't happen

Sperm Edwards
There was a clause in the trade deal, that the Jets would receive a 4th round pick in the 2008 draft. To my knowledge they are not even talking. Of course that could change after the season. Vilma is having a good season. He might want to test Free Agency. Then zilch for the Jets We already got 2 things: Dwight Lowery and the cap space that was saved by not signing Vilma to a long-term deal. Also consider we didn't know the long-term health status of his knee & he was still injured at the time we traded him. That cap space was instead used to lock up Kerry Rhodes. If the Saints sign him, we get a 2nd or a 3rd (likely a 2nd, since I think that's determined by his playing time in 2008 which he's going to eclipse if he stays healthy). If we don't, then we're free to re-sign him ourselves, though we will be in a bidding war with 31 other teams. Someone else will sign him for $6M-$7M/year if he hits FA. He may be worth that to a 4-3 team desperate for an experienced MLB, but he's clearly not worth $7M/year to the Jets. The Saints can get in decent cap shape next year, but they do have some key FA's: Vilma (UFA) Lance Moore (UFA) Jahri Evans (RFA) Zach Strief (RFA) Antwan Lake (UFA) Troy Evans (UFA) And on top of their own FA's they'll still need to add (from someone on their MB): 1. DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR (top need, no doubt) - ok, this doesn't affect the cap 2. FS (gaping hole in our defense) 3. WLB (lack of athleticism burns us way too often) 4. CB (lots of reserves, no true starters) 5. DE (Grant and Smith are HUGE disappointments) 6. Center (Goodwin's not the answer, no young guys behind him) 7. OT (Brown's knees are bad and getting worse, Stinch is mediocre) 8. RB (If Deuce is gone, we already know we can't rely on Reggie for the long haul... need a bruiser) 9. SS (Harper is a liability in coverage and is regressing as a tackler) 10. TE (Shockey's hurt, Campbell's old, and Billy Miller is getting old too... need a young buck here.) That's a long laundry list, so there is a chance they don't re-sign Vilma and instead look at him as a 1-year rental for cheap $ and a 2008 4th-rounder that's already gone. To sign him long-term costs them a 1st-round pick (not a second, as aec4 pointed out) plus cap room they're going to need. He's just not worth that. If they pay it, then great for us. But I wouldn't bank on it. Truth is, everyone knew we were looking to dump him (he's not the kind of player you keep as a backup), he was injured at the time, that knee condition will be with him his entire career/life, and there just weren't any teams interested in giving us more than the Saints did. He was on the trading block for a while & this was the best offer we got.
Jetsfan1015
I'm 90% sure we get the pick if he resigns. The interesting thing is, the Jets could still resign Vilma as a FA, and still keep the 4th. Of course that won't happen I am pretty sure the Saints have to sign him to a contract EXTENTION meaning if Vilma hits Free agency the Jets cant get more than a 3rd for him. And the only way for the Jets to get a 3rd is if he plays 85% of the defensive snaps and then I believe the Jets would have to send back a 4th round pick.
