I've read reports that he won't be completely healthy until he's 33, and he has interests outside of football anyway. It's not as far-fetched as you may think. Garb
Thank u.. u know this is being discussed in the top towers of the evil castle in boston as we speak Woudln't it be cool for Brady to have a tearful press conference and give his retirement speech only to change his mind and have ESPN fight his battles for him and people would start calling him Lord Brady while others will just think he's a dooshie? Yah, I think it's 'gonna happen too. I mean, Capers was supposed to be the head coach after BB was suspended for a year. SJ - btw, it's called "franchising a player." That is what the Pats will do. They will get a first round pick from some silly team. Pats will have two first rounders - which should help shore up the secondary woes. I hope. flgreen
No way Brady will be back. he wasn't a scrambling type QB, and he is still young by QB standards. If the weasel asks him to retire I suspect Brady will show him his middle finger. NE will find a way to franchise Cassel and try to trade him. I suspect he will get quite a bit for him. Cassel will owe his CAREER to BB. He'll be making the big bucks as a starter somewhere and he has no one to thank but BB who was the only man who stuck by him. Do you really think Pioli's going to pay $14.5 million to a backup QB? He's a great insurance policy but if there's one thing the Pats have learned is that quality QB's can be found and made. I've read reports that he won't be completely healthy until he's 33, and he has interests outside of football anyway. It's not as far-fetched as you may think. I do not see him hanging on like Brett. If you watched the video that circulated here, you know two things. One, he still has a desire to play football and that he thinks there is something else to life. With that in mind, I would say he leaves the game in about 5 years.

You seemingly forget that the league has made it very clear that they will not allow teams to franchise a player with the sole intent to trade him. There is no way that NE will be able to make a case that they franchised him with intent to keep him. None. Unless of course Goodell caves to NE's every will again. I do not think they franchise, but they can make a case. "Roger, we franchised him due to Tom's injury. We did not know how he would react to the injury until he started TC. Look at Carlson Palmer and any other number of QBs. Once, Tom showed he would still be the Hall of Fame QB, we sought to trade Matt."
Garb
They will get favorable picks for Cassel next season in a trade that happens because he was franchised. There are a few desperate teams out there in dire need of a QB and they will give up the pick(s) to get him. Thank Gawd too. They need defense. Garb
Read my last post Garb, they won't get away with franchising him. Yah they will. Brady won' be "ready" to play by the franchise deadline. So what you're saying is the league is going to say who you can play, regardless of health? That's a fight the league can't win.

Maybe, but the Patriots can use the Brady injury as a measure to keep Cassel as an insurance policy. That is why they should sign him, if he agrees, to a one year contract. Jared
Option 2: Patriots sign a long term deal with Cassel that rather than a signing bonus, includes a roster bonus set for the start of training camp. This would give the Patriots plenty of time to trade or cut him, and if they don't, he gets paid before the serious work starts (the kind that could lead to an accidental injury). If they trade him, he already has a long term contract in place with minimal/no cap hit to the Patriots. Or a team could trade with him contingent on renegotiation. Either way, there are ways around this that can make it amicable to all parties. Also, I think "our starting QB is coming off a season ending injury" is a pretty good reason to franchise your backup QB.
