SJ Reviews: 'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas'..somber yet powerful (3 1/2)

This Indie flick is so powerful that it will stay with you for longer than most movies.

Its a WW II story of a German SS officer who has been given the job of heading up a Concentration camp. We see his proud family, wife, older daughter and young son beaming as thier father is settling into his new position.

What this film then does is show the dissoultion of 1st the wife, then son and daughter as the realization hits what is really happening on the 'farm' across the woods.

The son in the meantine sneaks away daily and starts a friendship (thru the barbed wire) with another 8 year old who is a prisoner. To say the boy who plays the Jewish prisoner steals the movie, may be the biggest understatement of the year.

Its a tough subject, but please try and see this hard hitting, beautifully written story that leaves us with a lesson that is never old.

I have a really difficult time with films dealing with this subject matter. They're hard to take, but I also think it's very important to keep such things alive in the collective memory. And, how indomitable the human spirit can be in the face or horrible things.

Unfortunately, genocide is happening in other areas of the world as we speak. It's amazing how small our capacity to learn - or, how hard it is to retain the humanity we have left in a world gone mad. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Did you ever see 'Au Revoir Les Enfants'? Brutal. I saw it by myself in NYC years ago because my friend couldn't come with me at the time. I was actually glad he wasn't next to me when it was over. I kind of had to be alone with it.

Another great flick: 'The Believer'. I can't tout that movie enough for the acting alone.

I like the idea a sub-forum for him, a cinema thang, all things celluloid. I think the movie reviews are a big plus around here. I really enjoy them. Maybe in the tech forum as to space and direct it there? Just a thought.

Haha, I didn't mean it that way. It was just a suggestion to give your own stage and keep it one place. What do I know from these techno things. I know how to write and draw on a good day. That's about it.
