Red Sox Want Landmark Status for Fenway 25 minutes ago

BOSTON - The Boston Red Sox have applied to have Fenway Park recognized as a national historic landmark, which would make renovation and expansion work eligible for federal tax credits.

Janet Marie Smith, the team's vice president of planning and development, said Tuesday that the application was submitted to the National Park Service about a month ago. She did not know how long the review would take.

The Red Sox are in the midst of a decade-long, $200 million renovation of Fenway. Built in 1912, it is Major League Baseball's oldest and smallest stadium.

Smith could not put a dollar figure on the rehabilitation tax credit, which is designed to give property owners an incentive to save historic structures.

However, according to the Park Service's Web site, the rehabilitation tax credit "equals 20 percent of the amount spent in a certified rehabilitation of a certified historic structure."

According to the federal government's list of National Historic Landmarks, the only other Major League stadiums considered for landmark status were Wrigley Field and Comiskey Park, both in Chicago. The process was never completed for either stadium, and Comiskey has since has been torn down.

With all the crooked politians, all too-powerful (and Sox biased Media) and the Sheep - making it a historical landmark is a distinct possibility! All 'Lyin Larry has to do is guarantee free tickets to every democrat in State office. Plus, the Puritan "old school" values will prevail - coupled with kick-backs and evil promises - it will get done. It is the Massachusetts way!

Why is that dump considered an Historical Site? I mean, The Celtcis have won far more Championships than the Sox have. The old Boston Garden they played in was a dump too. Why was that torn down?

I blame the media. That's right. They have brain-washed you silly sheep.

No seriously, all joking aside...how can Garb or any other Red Sox fan want Fenway to be torn down and replaced with something else? Even a Camden Yards-esque park? Have you no sense of history...or economics?

Bottom line is this: The Henry Owners Group, ugly face of corporate America as they may be to granola-munching hippie socialists, are TREMENDOUS owners! The home sell-out streak is (im not looking up the exact numbers) but like 3 years and counting. That alone is an impressive feat! Factor in the fact that they charge the highest ticket prices in all of baseball and they have for four years! And guess what...they dont charge enough! If they did, there wouldnt be millions of lowlife scalpers polluting the streets of Kenmore Square. Phone lines wouldnt be tied up from March to September if they charged enough! (Scalpers get at least $100 for $45 RF seats)

Fenway tix are impossible to get! Everyone wants to see this magical team...and they ONLY want to see them at Fenway! Bottom Line: There is no better place to watch a baseball game and millions of tourists dump billions of dollars to come here and see the awe-inspiring sight of the Green Monster.

There wouldnt be NEARLY the interest in the Olde Towne Team (especially now that they've won the WS) if they played in some state-of-the-art complex, they'd be the non-contenders.

They dont have NY's earning potential...but they have been able to compete on their level and only last year and this year...they are actually putting a better product on the field.

Face it, Garb and others, these guys are GREAT for Boston!

Fenway is a landmark ballpark but I do disagree that taxpayers should have to pay - which is what this is about for the owners to do their renovations

Tax credit equals taxpayers footing the bill

JBF - liar!!! I recall a post somewhere here on the baseball forum where you said the park was indeed a pig and should be blown up, but that we are stuck with it. If I actually cared - I'd search for it. However, I have a medi/pedi appt. shortly - so, you're in luck.

Plus, and this is true EVERYWHERE - everybody loves a winner. Years ago getting tickets to opening day did not require your first born as payment and they were playing at FENWAY. Your argument blows. Find another. The place is a pig with perfurm on it. May smell a whole lot better, but she's still a pig.

...I thought it was you.....but perhaps I am wrong. Actually, I probably was. You, sir, are incapable of being objective and true when it comes to the Sox, Fenway, Sox Management and the corrupt, evil Boston media.

SJ for President of JN-RSN!!!!

Go Pats!
