I've read reports from several Jet players, and bench management personnel, that Gholston has re-written the book on Gatorade mixing ratios and player hydrating methodologies. If these guys are correct, Gholston is destined to make a huge impact at this year's NFL Waterboy Olympics, scheduled for Denver's Mile High Stadium in May. Let's wish him luck, fellas.

i'm most concerned by the lack of improvement

that's not a good thing

I'm also very concerned he hasn't flashed anything, not even once. not even a speed rush that came close or running a guy down from behind hustle play

I told myself he is making 2 transitions so go easy on him, but my patience is running out

because

this team really needs a ****ing speed rusher from the OLB position !!!!!

wow i can't believe some of you guys... no wonder people make fun of Jets' fans.. its cuz of most of u ppl that CRY like ****in babies cuz a guy can be a superstar in his first year of the NFL or the team loses ONE game. I know we've had bad luck in the past with drafts and games, but still crying like a baby about it isn't going to make anything better.. may be thinking positive for once could be a good thing for u ppl...

Steelers took Lawrence Timmons in round 1 last year and he still hasn't cracked the starting lineup yet. He does play in the nickel though, his INT on cassell pretty much sealed the blowout win over the patty's.

So i would say give Gholston time to learn and adjust, by this time next season you'll probably see much improvement.

I would never say this if I didnt believe it. The sooner we cut ties the better.

Even if your correct, and Gholston is a "total bust" You can't cut ties. If you do all of his guaranteed money hits your cap all at once. Or at best in two installments.

Because of all the FA signings the Jets had this year they have serious cap problems. They can't separate from Gholston. Nor should they.

With That said. I must say that Gholstons's play against Cutler last week really disappointed me. He showed no burst, no closing speed. Nothing.

Kid has to get at least one more year. Probably 2

A guy who i absolutely loved and was calling for two years ago was LaMarr Woodley out of Michigan. SP is probably the most familiar with his NFL play here, but i watched the kid play all the time at michigan. The knock on him coming out was that he was a tad slow and his stock dropped a bit down to the 2nd round. Now i'm not sure how many snaps he took last year but he had 13 tackles, 4 sacks and 1 FF. This year he has 35 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 2 FF, 4 FR and 1 int. Hopefully SP can expand on this but the biggest thing I noticed about his play this year is that he reacts much more, which in turn makes him quicker to the ball, thus he's in on many more plays this year.

Woodley had 2 sacks in his first 3 games and than 1 in the next 13; yes gholston's numbers don't compare, but those numbers lead me to believe that Lamarr was getting significant amount more playing time. I believe that his increased playing time during the past few very important weeks is reason enough to know he's improving. He is easily faster than he's shown and without an injury he didn't just lose speed; it is from being hesitant and thinking too much. Hopefully he can show some improvement the next 4 weeks and than we'll have to give him a full offseason, with a full training camp.

1.5 Sacks against Daunte Culpepper (Miami Dolphins) & 1.0 Sack against Byron Leftwich (most immobile quarterback of all time)

Well now that Ellis has been arrested for getting high and driving under the influence, Gholston will see a lot of End-play and OLB-play. Kenyon Coleman is going to have to step up, you think Mosley starts at End instead of Gholston? San Francisco's O-Line gives up a lot of sacks, I would love to see Gholston get his first (9) SACKS ON SUNDAY!!!!!

LET'S GO JETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I absolutely agree with you, 100%. He really has gotten faster, still hesitant to step up and hit someone and make a play, but that will come, first the speed of the game, then the fierce attitude (that's what I really want to see, I really want to see him drive THROUGH someone). I think it will come. He is so strong, in one rush towards the early part of the Tennessee game, he played LOLB and just exploded into the LT driving him at least a yard and a half into the backfield A/K/A CLOSING THE POCKET, something these so-called experts who say "CUT HIM, HE SUCKS", have no idea how important it really is. Progress folks....

Mangini did a great thing, he lit a fire up under Gholston, especially after a lackluster performance the ENTIRE team had on Sunday. You'll see. We finally know how to evaluate talent, just patience, WE'RE 8-4 WHY DOES GHOLSTON NEED TO BE SO GREAT!!!!!!! THINK ABOUT IT!!!!

LET'S GO JETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why are people saying that Gholston is going to replace Ellis? My God, the guy would get killed.

It will probably be CJ Mosley. I like CJ as a fill in for Ellis, but he ain't Ellis

Good post. People who work in our Pittsburgh office have told me they felt the same way about Woodley last year as we feel about Gholston now. After showing initial flashes last year, many of them thought he would be a bust. This year it has all come together for him and he is a big asset in their defense. As disappointing as Gholston has looked (worse than Woodley's rookie year), we have to give him at least another year.

I dont think you are going to see Gholston in our 3-4 fronts at DE. You will definitely see CJ Mosley and maybe some Bowens.

Exactly, Woodley showed "flashes". I'm not giving up on Gholston but seriously even a glimpse of #6 overall ability would be nice.

I think after seeing guys like Revis, Washington, and Rhodes play well in their rookie year, we kind of expected Gholston to be automatic right out of the gate as well.

If you want to call someone on this team a bust, it's D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Not for an offensive lineman, but for a #4 overall pick.

Type in "vernon gholston" on Google. The first suggestion will be "vernon gholston workout", and the second "vernon gholston bust". Just thought that was pretty funny.

Thats crazy--I just did it, and your right.

I am as concerned as you could possibly be about Gholston. Obviously most of you dont know my post as I posted on JI during the whole draft process but he was the one guy I didn't want in the draft. When we drafted him I was so pissed I pulled a Denny Green on JI calling him a bust the second we drafted him.

Ive been trying to like him, but its impossible. Why? The guy doesn't even look like he should be on a football team anywhere. He looks like Frankenstein out there....The guy looks like he doesnt belong on a football field.

Whats most upsetting is how much this could set us back. Besides the obvious 40m screw up--How long do you give him to improve? Because they picked him so high hell be here 4 years minimum taking up a ton of cap room that we could give to another big FA. What about if a stud OLB comes in the draft? With Pace, and Gholston here long term were going to pass but we definetly need the position.

I know--All of the above is VERY premature. But its just the way I feel about him. Im absolutely shocked about how poorly he looks out there even as a hater. Bowens should be at OLB if we want to get to the passer, or Murrell this year.

I remember I felt very similar to aec4, our resident Gholston hater before the draft and had the same concerns - Workout Warrior.

Then as it became increasingly obvious that we were likely going to draft him I start to sugarcoat everything and basically convince myself he would be a good pick.:bag:

I hope to God Gholston can prove himself, but I'm incredibly concerned.

We talked about this at lenght over there and I was adament that he was no good.

I dont want to give up on him yet, but there is nothing other than the coaching staff giving him more PT that makes me think he can play in the league.

Are you serious? Brick is playing at a near pro-bowl level, at the least. How many times have you seen him get beat this year? Wow, just clueless.

I am still a Gholston supporter. Just saying.

The defense of him has been stated ad naseum. It's not just that he is playing a position he's never played before, its that he's playing a position that he has never played before in a defensive system unheard of in college. The 3-4 defense is a rarity in college and the 3-4 read % react defense of Mangini's is even rarer. The Jets have too much invested in him to call him a bust after spot play in his rookie year. As to the Mario comparison, Mario was a starter from the first snap of his first game.

He's overthinking situations rather than just reacting. If you noticed on the play where he forced Cutler out of the pocket, he stopped when he saw Cutler fake the pass in order to jump and deflect the ball. That was taught by Mangini for the DLineman and rushing LBs according to the game broadcast in the past. Rather than being a mad bull he was obviously thinking, "Attack, wait, he's throwing, I have to jump up and block it, oh ****, its a fake, attack ..."
