Reports: Skip Holtz to Syracuse

The NFL Network first reported early this morning (Sunday) on their college football show that ECU head coach Skip Holtz has reached an agreement with Syracuse Athletic Director Daryl Gross on a deal that will make Skip Holtz the next head coach at Syracuse University. The report was also aired on local news stations, and info has been put up on a local paper's website. All callers to the SU Athletic Dept. were told that the dept. has no knowledge of the situation, calls to ECU AD and Daryl Gross about this report have both gone unreturned.

The NFLN reported that a press conference announcing the agreement will likely be made Monday, when both Skip Holtz and Daryl Gross will be at the College Football Hall Of Fame, Holtz for his father, Lou Holtz, and Gross for former SU star Don McPherson. Both are being inducted in ceremonies taking place Monday and Tuesday.

I think this is great news and a great hire. Holtz is young, motivated, carries a big last name, has HC experience, recruiting ties, and will be determined to succeed here, considering he probably has bigger goals on his mind than the Syracuse job. Looking forward to the official announcement tomorrow!!

Nope. Didn't see it.

Either way though the local papers here have gotten confirmation that the report was inaccurate. Making Bradley 0-2 in the past two weeks with his "insider reports". (Last week he reported that Weis will be fired from ND, LOL).

The local paper (Syracuse Post Standard) has confirmed that the two sides (Gross and Holtz) had not yet interviewed each other, and there are no indications that Syracuse has offered Holtz any type of contract or deal. However, they also confirmed that Cuse is one of several team that has seeked permission to speak with Holtz, and that Syracuse is the only one of those programs that Holtz has agreed to talk to. Holtz and Gross will likely talk tomorrow at the College Hall of Fame.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a generous offer thrown at him right away either... reports indicate that we've already missed on our top 3 targets (Kiffen, Edsall, and Al Golden), and there's not going to be much time or coaches left if Holtz falls through.... Especially now that Turner Gill of UB, another SU target, is reportedly close to signing on with Auburn.

One can only hope.... Holtz said he promised ECU AD Holland that he will sit down and talk with him upon returning from the meeting in NY--No matter what Cuse throws at him. So Im not expecting anything until Friday at the earliest. Hell, he may even decide to wait until after his bowl game to make anything official, depending on when that is. If his comments and his dad's comments have any indication though, I expect he'll make the announcement probably some time next week. They both (he and his dad) both said that Skip wants to make a quick decision on this whole process. As soon as he has all the info he needs, he's going to make a decision. Letting this drag out is only creating a huge distraction. Im expecting a decision to come sometime next week, no matter what that decision is.

If that decision is to stay at ECU, it seems as if Gross already has Saints OC Doug Marrone all lined up and ready to take the job should Gross pull the trigger. Once again though, Marrone is coming from the NFL, and has no head coaching experience whatsoever. We all know what happened the last time we went that route...
