Can Chad Pennington End the Pretending Jets?

Pipe dream, Chad could never beat the Jets in Week 17.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/90537-can-chad-pennington-end-the-pretending-jets

Losing to the San Fransisco 49ers on Sunday just may have ended the Jets playoff hopes. The final knockout punch could come from cut quarterback Chad Pennington and his surprising Miami Dolphins in the final game of the regular season.

What happened to this Jets team after beating the previously undefeated Tennessee Titans? Did they start to believe in their own hype? Did they think they were the team to beat in the AFC as many experts touted them? Or were they just a pretender and not contender all along?

Looking back at there schedule it is hard to find any quality wins except for their two most recent over the Titans and Patriots. In the first week they narrowly beat the Dolphins, then they followed their 1-0 start off with a loss to the Patriots, which was a game where Matt Cassel made his first start since high school, then they got trounced by the Chargers in San Diego.

In week four, the Jets had a coming out party against the now playoff-bound Arizona Cardinals before heading into their bye. During the next five games, the Jets racked up wins against the lowly Bengals and Rams, narrowly defeated the Chiefs, lost to the 3-10 Raiders, and beat the free falling Bills.

I did not bother to read the article.

There really needs to be a moratorium on posting articles from 'The Bleacher Report'. You do realize anyone can sign up to have a column there, correct?

In fact, here's our winner today:

I'm originally from Jersey but moved out to Arizona three years ago. I am a Senior at Arizona State majoring in print journalism. I am a huge Jets and Nets fan. Since moving out here I have not minded rooting for the Dbacks occasionally while still keeping up with the Mets.

Danny is a name that could go either way, but I'm going to assume that it's the douche bag, and not the Sloppy Super Girl. Though, I'd probably value the latter's input exponentially more.

Seriously, that writers at that site have almost as little literary chops as the staff over at that 'It Ain't Easy Being Green" blog...

Fine, is this more credible...

Numbers suggest Dolphins are favorites to win AFC East

Yards gained per pass attempt

1. Dolphins: 7.8

2. Patriots: 6.9

3. Jets: 6.7

Several football observers insist that the most important statistic in the game is yards gained per pass attempt. This statistic indicates an offense's ability to gain big pass plays.

And the Dolphins are clearly better at it than the Patriots or Jets.

"This statistic is still No. 1 in importance, not only that you gain the big pass play, but also that you prevent them," said Bud Goode, 85, who for the last 51 years has provided NFL statistical data to teams and various subscribers. "NFL defenses are built to force an offense to make mistakes over long drives. Huge chunks of yardage allowed on big pass plays kill that plan and make defenses scramble."

Thus, in Goode's formula of gains-vs.-losses differential, the order alters this way: Miami, Jets and Patriots.

Quarterback Chad Pennington is known more for his accuracy than for being a deep threat. But Pennington is doing his job in stretching the field and five Dolphins average more than 13.4 yards per catch.

Scoring defense

1. Dolphins: 20.0

2. Patriots: 21.2

3. Jets: 22.5

Simple. The fewer points you allow, the better your chances at victory. NFL coaches for many years have insisted that defenses should not be ranked by how few yards they allow (as they currently are) but by how few points they allow. For many coaches, this is the only stat that matters to their defense.

The Dolphins in six of their last seven games have allowed 19 or fewer points.

Turnover differential

1. Dolphins: Plus-12

2. Jets: 0

3. Patriots: Minus-2

Every NFL coach before and after every game preaches turnovers. Cannot commit them. But have to force them. They preach that turnovers change field position and scoring chances and momentum.

And the Dolphins, easily, are best at this task.

Four Dolphins have two interceptions and linebacker Joey Porter has complemented Miami's turnover success with a league-high 16.5 sacks. The Dolphins have committed only four lost fumbles and six interceptions.

Yes. Do you want to know what's the most credible?

If the Jets lose to the Dolphins it would send the Jets in a downward spiral just like the Spike Game in 94.

Think about if for a minute. The Jets decide to be a nice guy and let Chad go instead of holding out for a deal and then he comes back and knocks them out of the playoffs ?

Heads would roll. Mangini, Tannenbaum, etc, etc.

They don't even want to think about the consequences if they lose to the Fish.

Jets will not lose to Pennington at the Meadowlands that is for sure

If the Jets make Penny throw the ball (who wouldn't want to throw on the Jets) his flutterballs

will be up for grabs....haveen't we seen this crap ecough to know what will happen to Penny in December?

Haven't you heard the new game plan? Sutton and Mangini are afraid Chad will beat us over the top and will be in cover four the entire game. Oh yeah, and they think by putting Jenkins in, it will discourage Miami from trying to run, so they are going to bench him.

I hear Pouha is getting reps at free safety too. That should really beef up our run defense.

I can't wait!

Lets look at the facts.

1. Chad is awful in the cold. His late season games in the Meadowlands for 6 years were one disaster after another.

2. Miami, as an entire team, are awful in the cold. The play in warm weather all year long and have had the luck of not one cold weather game all season. Their game against Buffalo ended up in a freakin' dome.

3. The Dolphins can't beat the Jets. Haven't been able to for years now. The last time they could was when the Jets had Brooks freakin' Bollinger starting at QB. And the Dolphins still only barely won.

The Jets could very easily lose to both Buffalo AND Seattle, but Miami isn't even the slightest concern.

DO it with the current NFL set up... that is such old news... many of the current NFL powerhouses could have pulled off what they did then...

Fact is we're the only team to do it and we'll keep sipping champagne every year. I notice the Jets have never even come close to being undefeated, maybe you'll make a run next year.

They got lucky. Do it again and then Ill show some respect.

They still did it.

Your joke of a franchise has done virtually nothing in the last 40 years. You criticism is a joke considering where you are talking from.

Lets be honest, Dolphins fans going on about the '72 season is only slightly less sad than Jets fans going on about Super Bowl III. Both were great achievements and are special for different reasons, but are now LONG since passed, have nothing to do with anything today's teams and outside of those teams fans, nobody really gives a ****. Time for everyone to move on.

Except 43 other times a team has won the Supebowl, no other team has gone undefeated like the glorious Miami Dolphins.

Please reread the second half of your post. Then remember that was 36 years ago. That really doesn't seem sad to you? Seriously, get over it. I could sit here and argue the merits of Super Bowl III with you, but its pointless. In the end, none of it means a damn thing today. And to get back to the point of how this debate began, a September Jets win over the Dolphins is still much more relevant to today than either event.

1) Look at any teams record and you will see "non-quality" wins, especially the Dolphins. Francesca went through them last night on the FAN and there were only three convincing wins.

2) the Jets never lose to the Dolphins and will not lose in week 17 whether there is a playoff game on the line or not.
