SouthernJet
Maybe they should have saved a few office staff and fired Sutton? NFL laying off about 150 Associated Press Updated: December 9, 2008, 12:40 PM ET NEW YORK -- The recession has hit the NFL. The league said Tuesday it is cutting more than 10 percent of its headquarters staff in response to the downturn in the nation's economy. The cuts were announced in a memo to league staff by commissioner Roger Goodell. The league is eliminating about 150 of its staff of 1,100 in New York, NFL Films in New Jersey and production facilities in Los Angeles. Goodell said these were difficult and painful steps, but necessary in the current economic environment. The NFL has been symbolic of the wealth surrounding professional sports, but it now joins the NBA, Major League Baseball and NASCAR in announcing layoffs. bitonti
i call bulls--t - the NFL isn't effectd by a downturn...they make more money every year - they (like many companies) just use the economic news as an excuse to fire people.
Bob
I'll bet Goodell didn't take a pay cut.

Amen. Sure times are tough but people are definitely jumping on the bandwagon and that isn't right. The NFL merchandise sales might be down a few percent. But to lay off this many people is weak. Garb
Especially at X-Mas. Lay-off's are always 'round Thanksgiving and X-mas. I'm sure there was some study done that said this was the best time - done by some azzholes! I swear co's are laying off people in order to maintain, or increase, yearly bonuses for the big guns. I've seen it. It's gross. To some, greed is still good apparantly.

Lil Bit Special
The league will finish with about 50 million less in revenue versus last year. When they made 7 billion.

Maybe not the NFL itself, but NFL Films is a different story. I've worked down there, the place is a castle. Just a monstrosity of a facility with tons of moving parts. I would not be at all surprised if they were hemorrhaging money down there. And as the article states, they will be cutting from there.
