"Happy Holidays" Edition of Post of the Week - December 19, 2008

POTW Bot

Recommended Posts

Happy Holidays y'all, hope the season is treating you all well and that your shopping is done. At this time of year I always try to think of the things in life to be thankful for - I hope you guys and gals have as many things on the "thankful" list as I do this year. Enjoy the season - may it be a fun one for you all.

This week I've started a new feature in POTW - we're calling it Nomination of the Week. Some of the nominations are really, really great so we're going to recognize those as wel from here on out. Make them nominations good, folks. :) Anyhow...

On to the nominations for this week (and an extra day, but who's counting)...

========== ++++++++++ ==========

Topic: Win Out Or Get Out

Couldn't agree more.

I typed this up...and then it turned into my "Did I really see..." post.

If we don't win out, sadly the franchise may be better off losing the rest of them - only possible way Mangini gets sh*tcanned. I've seen enough. He may not be worse than Herm, but as of right this moment he's not markedly better despite (probably) being smarter on paper. Besides, that’s like choosing whether you’d rather have the runs on a first date with someone you like or when you’re stuck in highway traffic with someone you don’t.

This pizza-faced mule’s main background is the secondary & the only one in our defensive backfield (not just starting, but on the entire roster) who doesn't suck is a "sure-thing" first round draft pick. So apparently Mangini can get Troy Brown to cover decently but has some difficulty with Kerry Rhodes? I'm not buying it. David Barrett was never great, but even he wasn’t so bad that having him on the field even intermittently is always a liability. And Hank Poteat, Drew Coleman, Justin Miller...these are the guys he felt worthy of bringing into camp with little/no competition & then making the final roster cutdown. The "competition" for Abram Elam was Eric Smith. The competition for Eric Smith was Abram Elam. Makes me think of the "competition" between Adrien Clarke and Jacob Bender.

Mangini’s defensive coordinator, for the 3rd straight season, is a LB coach and that crew look like they would have some difficulty covering half the geeks and fat tubs of sh** on this message board. All these pass-rushers brought (or retained) here - Thomas, Pace, Gholston, Bowens - and meanwhile our 2-gapping NT and 2-gapping DE have more sacks than our starting pass-rushing OLB'ers. Those two have a combined 1.5 sacks over the past 8 games (zero coming from Bryan Thomas); the same total as CJ Mosely over that stretch. They're either a poor judge of talent, doesn't know how to coach the talent they have at their disposal, don't know how to use the talent they have at their disposal, or all of the above.

Spare me any “oh, well he really wanted Rob Ryan” garbage. You don’t piss away another season with an incompetent DC because your buddy’s under contract with someone else for 1 more year.

Sure, this team has weaknesses. But are our weaknesses worse than on teams who beat us like the Raiders and 49ers (or the friggin’ Chiefs, who nearly beat us as well)? Does anyone seriously believe the personnel on our defense is worse than the Broncos? The 49ers (without Nate Clements mind you) can keep Favre & Jones & Leon & our zillion-dollar OL off the field but we can’t seem to prevent one Shaun Hill from completing half a dozen passes to Bustant Johnson as the 49ers – THE 49ERS – control the ball for over 40 minutes despite fumbling the ball 5x (plus a pass thrown directly to David Bowens)?

The team is plenty talented enough. If you buy a goose that lays golden eggs and chop its head off the only thing that ends up getting laid is Thor.

The Nomination: "good post" PETROCK

Editor's Note: So that's how Thor does it...

Topic: ****The OFFICIAL Jets/Bills Game Thread****

The only win in the regular season last year that the Giants had against a team with a winning record was against the 9-7 Redskins. We have proven that we can beat good teams. Thankfully the dredges of the NFL don't play in the postseason so we should be OK if we get there.

Runner-up of the Week Sponsored by greengal's uncle's wife

Topic: Stay of Execution

That is what the Jets got yesterday.

That was the one thought that ran through my mind after watching that debacle of a game yesterday. The Jets had no buisness winning that game but because the Bills for some inexplicable reason decided to throw the football the Jets got a win.

Offensively again they started fast getting Coles and Cotchery involved but once again struggled once they got through their first two series. Now maybe I am crazy but if your passing game starts to bog down some wouldn't it make sense to run to football ? The Jets have the leading rusher in the AFC in Thomas Jones and Leon Washington (Who deserves alot more carries if you ask me) and yet we continue to throw the football. Even opening up the offense a little more at the request of Lord Favre. This was a game where the Jets needed to run the football alot more if anything to keep that abortion of a defense off the field.

Speaking of abortions of a defense...

Can someone please put an A.P.B out on the Jets Defense. Where the F did they go ? Zero pass rush, very little if any blitzing (Sorry sending a LB in a 3-4 defense doesn't constitute a blitz) and some incredibly poor tackling.

How can this defense with the talent they have (yes they do have talent) become so bad so fast ? Are they just worn out ? Have they have been hitting Sean Ellis' bong ?

The first two years the Jets have had to scale back the defense because the players were having trouble with it. It is now happening again. Can't tackle, can't cover.

There is a conservative nature to this defense that just makes me insane. All they do is sit back and let the offense dictate what they do on defense.

BULLSH!T

The defense should ALWAYS dictate what the offense does. If anyone watched the Ravens,Steelers games you saw two teams that defensively fly around get to the football and get there with malice in their hearts. Blitz, pound, fly around to the football (Did anyone see Ed Reed just launch himself into Holmes on that contreversial TD). When was the last time you saw a Jet do that ?

There is too much thinking about responsibilities out there and not enough hitting out there. That is why our first round pick was inactive this week.

Vernon Gholston should have had just one job this year. Get to the QB. nothing more, nothing less, and with Bryan Thomas now going M.I.A for a second straight season this should be the time for Gholston to be getting in there and picking up Thomas' slack. But since you have think about "Well if the running does this, and the QB takes a three step drop and the TE does a hook" the season has become a total washout for our #1 pick.

The Jets have two weeks left and somehow still control their own fate. What do they have to do ? Well if you ask me. I would hook up my offense to Jones and Leon and let them carry this team to the post season. Run the football, eat up time on the clock and keep the defense off the field. It might be boring but it might be their only shot.

Somehow Mangini is going to have to swallow his pride and cut his defense loose on Wallace and Pennington. They are generating no pass rush and as we have seen if you give a QB time to throw the football anyone can find an open receiver on this defense.

The Jets have a second chance. Hopefully the don't blow it.

The Nomination: "well said" afosomf

Editor's Note: Great post, Shawn, I hope they use that get out of jail free card they got last week well...

No you're an idiot. You are not a professional athlete, and more than that, you're an idiot. I guarantee I have more experience than you, and I am smarter so I actually know what I'm talking about. And this means a lot coming from me since I consider myself pretty dumb. It's just you, you are this level of idiocy that simply can't be achieved by normal human beings.

Topic: clayton just said if we dont make the playoffs mangini might be out...

On Aug 7th with Chad given the gate and Favre in place I saw this as 10 win team with a possible play-off appearance. Wha-lah! Thats just about where we're sitting - what a f'kn miracle. With all the acquisitions and the schedule - the better question would have been who didn't see this?

Your assertion that this heavenly position we're in is due to Magini's innate genius and ability is poo poo.

I'm very aware that pro-bowl nominations mean nothing - but even with that in mind it's more than coincidental that we led professional football in nominations. I'm also not claiming the Jets are on the top of the talent curve in the NFL - but we're well over average and have enough on both sides of the ball to be an impact team.

Just as Sparano seemingly has done the most with the least down in Miami - I think Mangini and his band of schwanses have done the least with the most for the Jets.

The proof to all of this is being able to dominate some of the leagues better teams and being left raped and freezing by some of the leagues worst teams so far this year.

I give Mangini credit for putting all the new components together in a relatively short time, but I think most avg to below avg coaches should be capable of doing that effectively.

The Nomination: "Sparano - best with the least

Mangini - worst with the best

well said NJ." drago

Editor's Note: Solid post, NJ - all good points. No excuses for this team to lose to the likes of the Raiders, the Niners, and the Broncos.

Topic: Over 2 years and 20,000 posts later...

I will keep this really simple...

Thanks Max for giving us a great place to express our feelings about the JETS and hang with other cool JETS fans... there is nothing like this out there it really is unique.

A VERY brief "ECURB" history... It started by fighting to the death with TX... Then the poster formerly known as "Bill Parcells"... Beat Barton in an official JN debate voted on by JN members :)... and it was all because I defended Chad so much you would think I was his gay lover... now I want Mangini gone so badly I cry at night... (at least Sutton please)... These things have made me in the running for Homer of the year (damn you BZ for beating me!)... and now getting votes for being too negative...

Through all of it I continue to find that even when we disagree on JN we all share the same common goal in mind... to watch a JETS Superbowl win ASAP!

JetNation makes the experience of being a New York JETS fan complete, it wouldn't be the same without it.

I was tempted only to post this smiley ( :Just Joined: ) but I decided to go the lame post route instead... GO JETS!

(disclaimer: I did not play pro-sports and anything I say is not true because of it... that will never get old... ever)

The Nomination: "Congrats to a JN legend." Lil Bit Special

Editor's Note: Not bad for a guy who didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night...Congrats, e!

Eric Mangini 23-23 (.500).............????

Dick Jauron 22-24 (.478, but was 13-3 in year 3).........34-51 thereafter (.400)

Nice little list of assclowns I managed to lump him in with, yes?

Plus, most of the guys on your list coached those first 3 seasons before there was free agency. There was also no salary cap that forced other good teams to let go of their top talent). So 9 of the 14 you mentioned had to wait for their own draft picks to pan out AND be a good coach to boot.

I'm still holding out hope he is one of those from above, but he sure doesn't look the part at this point.

The Nomination: "Sperm Edwards is a genius once again." 124

Editor's Note: Damn, Spermie, you need "nice hostest" lessons from Max. :) Nice work to both of you on the lists...
