I've been wanting to get you guys thoughts and un-biased views and opinions on this subject for quite a few weeks now but have always feared jinxing my team. ;)

(Doin' the anti-jinx dance as i type this) :D

How good is the Steelers defense?

Not gonna bore ya with an article or bunch of stats. I think most of us have seen em' by now. Now i will admit that i have a biased opinion because of rooting interest. But imo this Steelers D is as good or better than any Steeler D i've got to see in my lifetime. Yeah that's a bold statement and i mean absolutely no dis-respect to the Steel Curtain teams. But i believe it's valid. Of course they have alot left to prove this season to really be compared, that goes without saying.

Anyway, just thought i'd see if i can get some opposing fan views on my defense.

I do not think the Steelers defense is an all time great defense but I think it is the best today (the Ravens are close though). The Steelers defense is a Super Bowl caliber defense. In a side not Rothesberger showed me a lot in that last drive against the Ravens Sunday.

i find it hard to annoint a defense 1 week after shutting down the mighty joe flacco

the ravens offense sucks and he's a rookie.

steelers are a great D but let's not go crazy. they need to stay healthy, without a few key players they aren't that great anymore.

No, i wanted to ask this for a couple weeks now. Flacco has nothing to do with it. This D has kept us in every single game this year and even with some horrible offense at times. Don't teams usually have a couple games or so a year where they just have an off day and lose by a decent margin? This D hasn't had one all year. Thats why i asked, basically.

Agree that key players need to stay healthy but thats the same for any great D.

You're probably one of the top 5 worst posters on this site.

I think the best you can do is be in the Honorable Mention category of Best Defenses.

Your Run D is good, but it not the Best of All-time as far as performance. I think the Ravens run D in 2001 absolutely shut the running game down.

Your Pass D is good as well,m but again it is not the best of all-time. I think the Bears 1985 Pass D was a bit better.

I think with the exception of the Dallas game, your team seems to make halftime adjustments better then most.

I think you are the best D this year, but not as good as an all-time D. In the end, that is not that bad.

The Steelers have a great defense - the best in the NFL. But don't go crazy comparing them to the Steel Curtin. Their AFC competition this year is pretty weak. They are not facing Ken Stabler's Raiders, Bert Jones and the Colts, Bob Griese and the Dolphins, Dan Fouts and the Chargers, OJ Simpson, etc.

They look great... now be honest with me... how much more talent is there actually on your D compared to the JETS D? IS it as far apart as their play? Or does Pitt just use the 3-4 properly?

Honestly, beats the hell out of me.

I know we've had this system seems like forever and have a bunch of veteran players that have been in the system long enough to not miss many assignments and such. I also know that Tomlin made it a point to emphasize the passrush more than we have before. By that i mean Harrison and Woodley rushing alot more.

We bring Lawrence Timmons in on passing downs, who ya got that compares favorably to him?

When we blitz, it almost seems like a sure fire blitz these days due to Woodley/Harrison occupying blockers.

It's hard to compare to other 3-4 D's.

The 2008 Steelers' defense is among the top 10 of all time

The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense went into Sunday's game in Baltimore ranked first in the NFL in every major category.

Sixty minutes later, it had held the Ravens to nine points and had surrendered only 202 yards. Sunday was Pittsburgh's 14th consecutive game holding an opponent to less than 300 yards, tying the 1973 Rams for the longest such streak to start a season.

Clearly the Steelers have the best defense in the NFL this season. But where do they rank all time? Here's a look at my top 10.

10. 1990 New York Giants: Like all great defenses, the '90 Giants were solid against the run and the pass. But they also had the ability to send the great Lawrence Taylor after the quarterback. And Taylor also had the great idea to send female escorts after the quarterback.

LT, a real man of genius.

9. 1991 Philadelphia Eagles: Reggie White, Jerome Brown and Clyde Simmons led a dominant Eagles defense that for years had been accused of taking bounties on opposing players. The '91 Eagles went 10-6 but missed the playoffs, and for some reason the defense never thought to take a bounty on Eagles quarterbacks Pat Ryan, Brad Goebel, Jeff Kemp and Jim McMahon.

8. 1973 Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins went undefeated in 1972, but most people forget that in '73 they won the Super Bowl again and set an NFL record by allowing only 150 points in the entire 14-game season. To this day, they pop champagne any time an NFL team plays its 15th game of the season.

7. 1971 Minnesota Vikings: The motto of The Purple People Eaters was "Meet at the quarterback." Or, wait

Thanks for posting that. All i remember hearing all pre-season was that my team would not make it through such a tough schedule without at least 6 losses. Well here they are among the best records in the game. And i'm a huge Big Ben fan but i guarantee my offense had very little to do with that record. All Ben has had to do is pull out a winning drive in the 4th a few times and my D took care of the rest.

I'll take back my statement that this is the best ever Steeler D though. Wow just lookin' at the stats from that '76 D is mind boggling.
