wildthing2022000
I have a 47" HDTV (http://www.vizio.com/productDetails.aspx?id=1628&pid=1504) with a PS3 and a Wii and I'm confused on what kind of home theater system I should get with a budget of $200-$300. It's in a small room() so I won't need any big systems. Is this a system that would work with the hdtv and the ps3 or am I going to have to find a better system? http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S3100-Channel-Entertainment-System/dp/B0015M1BCS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1229557865&sr=1-

If you're not a major audiophile, thats a great entry system - I pretty much have the same one, but in silver. I also have a PS3, Wii, HD-DVR, and DVD player connected to it. Fishooked
As a matter of fact, I have the EXACT SAME system, at least the receiver is: You'll have no problems going with this setup. I pretty much have the exact components you do, except I have the a Vizio "42 - how many HDMI inputs does the TV have? The receiver doesnt have HDMI inputs, just run optical cables into the receiver for the PS3 and your HD/DVR. I used the digital coax for the DVD player - the Wii you'll probably have to run std audtio cables into it...keep me posted.
wildthing2022000
My TV has 4 of them, 1 is used for the PS3. Could I just use the TV as a base for the system instead of trying to wire them all into it? Seems easier to me just to do that.
Maxman
The Onkyo receiver is excellent. I work with a major audiophile and one day when I showed him the surround sound system I was going to get he talked me into buying the Onkyo receiver. And then he gave him a $2,000 Bose speaker system and sub woofer (true story).

You could, but the speakers on the Vizio are ok, nothing great, as is the case with all speakers on LCD tvs. This Onkyo receiver doesnt have HDMI inputs, but you can still get digital quality sound by using the optical and digital coax inputs on the receiver. Its funny because I just went through the same thing just two weeks ago, setting up my Vizio tv to my Onkyo - and adding my PS3, Wii, etc... Im assuming you have all the HDMI cables you need to connect everything to the Vizio, correct? Also do you have a DVD player or anything else you're connecting? Im assuming you have a HD cable box/DVR that you're connecting as well? First off get all your cables from www.monoprice.com, if you haven't done so already. If you need any more HDMI cables for whatever the reason nows the time to get those too. In my scenario, I ordered two optical cables and one digital coax cable. You may need another set of component cables for the Wii (from the TV - prolly AV1 to the Onkyo, the red+white ones) I did the following: -optical cable from CABLE/DVR box to OPTICAL1 on the Onkyo receiver -optical cable from the PS3 to OPTICAL2 on the Onkyo receiver(make sure you change your PS3 settings in Sound from HDMI to OPTICAL) -for the Wii run the red+white from AV1 out from the TV to AV1 on the Onkyo I think thats the basics - anyway, lmk - I think you're going to like the setup - its a really good home theater setup for the price. wildthing2022000
I was looking at getting this so the Wii looks better: http://www.amazon.com/Official-Wii-Component-Video-Cable-Nintendo/dp/B000JJRV90/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_3 BTW - Where does the coax cable go? Also do I bother with the red and white if I get this? I just have a standard digital cable box which I disconnect so I can get games in HD which I'll reconnect after the Super Bowl. So for now it's just 1 of each cable until I bother getting a HD DVR and HD service right?

If you want the sound for the Wii to come out of the home theater, then you'll need anoither set of component cables to go out from the TV to the Onkyo receiver. You might just decide to use the red&white instead to go OUT from the TV to your receiver. When I say coax, I mean digital coaxial cable, not the 'cable coaxial' cable that runs into your house for cable. A digital coaxial cable is for audio only. Its not as good as optical, but better than your std red&white. Back up a second though - you dont have HD service yet?
wildthing2022000
Well my cable company has squat for HD channels 734 A&E HD HD Ultra View 735 History Channel HD HD Ultra View 742 Smithsonian HD HD Ultra View 742 MOJO HD Ultra View 770 Comcast SportsNet New England HD Basic (HD Only) 771 ESPN2 HD Basic (HD Only) 773 ESPN HD Basic (HD Only) 774 New England Sports Network-HDTV Basic (HD Only) 775 HD Theater HD Ultra View 777 HBO HDTV-East HD Premium 778 Showtime HDTV-East HD Premium 779 Cinemax HDTV-East HD Premium 782 WGBH-DT - PBS Basic (HD Only) 784 WBZ-DT - CBS Basic (HD Only) 785 WCVB-DT - ABC Basic (HD Only) 786 WFXT-DT - FOX Basic (HD Only) 787 WHDH-DT - NBC Basic (HD Only) 790 Starz HDTV-East HD Premium 791 The Movie Channel HDTV-East HD Premium 795 Universal HD HD Ultra View 796 TBS HD HD Ultra View 797 TNT - HD HD Ultra View 798 Palladia HD Ultra View Unplugging the box I can get all the locals & NESN(Red Sox) & Comcast(Celtics) so I'm not missing much not paying an extra $100+ a year for HD service+DVR. Couldn't I just get the sound of the Wii/cable from the TV since it's not high-def like the PS3? So I could just buy the official component cable for the Wii, connect that to the TV and get the 2 opticals to connect the PS3 to the system and the TV to the system? Forgot you were up in NE, but every cable company is different. For example, my new cable box is also my HD Tuner AND DVR in one. So my one box basically does 3 things. Check their website and see whats availabl.e Watching sports alone in HD is well worth it, plus you'll find yourself watching anything, once its in HD.
