Maxman
He said this right before the 3 pm update. They talked about the Jets for 10 or so minutes. Mike said he was told that Mangini is spending all of his time on the defense. That the players are frustrated with the lack of results. Sounds like Mangini is doing something we hoped he was going to do after the Denver game, San Fran at the latest. He also talked about Romeo coming here next year as DC. And said Sutton's seat was beyond hot.

124
If this is true and Mangini is going to take over the D from here on out than this makes it three for three in years Bob Sutton was the Defensive Coordinator and Eric Mangini had to step in and take over the play calling duties. Enough is ****ing enough. Fire this bum and get ANYBODY else. Pluck a fan from the stands if you have too, enough is enough with Bob Sutton. The guy is the worst coach to never get blasted in this city/area.

If he hasn't figured out him and Sutton have different ideas on how to run the defense by now, he may never catch on.

By the way, stick a fork in Sutton. Im not giving my personal feelings... more like what I think the JETS will do... I would be willing to entertain the idea of Mangini for 1 more year with a new DC... if and only if there are no coaches that are an upgrade available... faba
It is a little late for adjustments and such- we just need to blitz and attack -that is the only chance this defense gives us to win in the playoffs if we get there.

How can you demand excellence of your players, yet you keep a D Coordinator on that you don't even trust. I think they put all their eggs in the Ryan basket last year. They thought Al Davis wouldn't stop Kiffin from letting him go. They were wrong and by the time it all played out too much time had passed. I agree though, if they don't trust him -- they shouldn't have kept him. This move, even though I agree with it, is like them hedging their bet a bit. All I really want to see at least once is the defensive formation that is no formation at all. Everyone standing around and then a strange blitz\zone scheme. Just give me one play like that. I like it.

ZachEY
Mangini needs to do this to save his own ass... Exactly. Do we really know that this is any better? Mangini wasn't exactly a stud DC for NE.
Greenseed3
What's funny is, Sutton would get torn apart by the same team. I wouldn't say "torn apart", but he definitely plays with too much caution. Mangini is way more aggressive and will take that calculated risk... look at the challenges Mangini plays as head coach. What I like best, is the way Eric justifies his moves. When we go for it on 4th and 2, 4th and 1 (or whatever); we do so for a reason that Eric can justify. Conversely, Sutton seems to try and sqeak-by games and play "good enough" defense. I hope we see a more attacking approach from Mangini. One that permits players to adjust the scheme should they get a "hunch"... kinda like offensive audibles but on defense. I think Rhodes should be able to blitz or jump routes whenever he feels like it, and I hope Mangini frees his playmakers to make those kind of plays. In fairness Sutton can't justify anything publicly because he isn't allowed to talk to the media. I am sure if he did though, he wouldn't convince us anyway. Barton
When he took over for Sutton during the 2006 season, our D did end up improving alot. It was the cleveland game where he took over and our D became 1 of the better scoring D's in the 2nd half of that season. Hopefully we get the same results this time, but why didnt he do this weeks ago (not to mention completely scrapping Sutton after 06')???

Bob Sutton is a pretty good LBer coach or maybe they can give Crennell an Asst. HC title but really make him the defensive co-ordinator. I'd hate to see Sutton get ****canned altogether but come on man we need some stops and I don't think Jets nation (not the site) could survive watching He Who Shall Remain Nameless beat us on a Sunday night flew job in 2 weeks.... Garb
Good move - but look deeper. Why announce it publically? Typical spiteful sleazy sh*t from Mangini. Not sure how you can trust an HC that throws players and coaches under the bus in public. He has a history of doing this. His public humilation of Kendall was epic. I imagine his players privately think he's a serious d-bag.
