Herm Edwards won't quit as coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, but sources say that with only one year left on his contract, he may not have the energy to embrace a run with a new general manager after Carl Peterson resigned Monday.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has commenced a search for a new GM, saying he has a "long working list" of candidates that he'd like to get to a "manageable" number over the next two weeks before he focuses on an intensive interview process.

Hunt's elimination of Bill Kuharich, the team vice president of player personnel, as a GM candidate already has made Edwards somewhat disappointed about the process, sources said.

Also, Edwards has a young family, with two children under 5 years old, and the strain of a season that has resulted in several gut-wrenching losses has taken its toll on him, the sources added.

Even though the Chiefs have lost 21 of their last 23 games under Edwards, Hunt told ESPN: "I've been supportive of the job he's done and approach he's made to rebuild the franchise. When we went into this process, we both knew it would be hard but it's been harder than expected. "I like the path we've gone with the younger players even though I wished we'd won more games. I want a new GM who believes in building the team through the draft with young players."

Edwards does not intend to resign but will wait on a resolution that brings more clarity to his future, the sources said. That could include a mutual decision in which Hunt honors the final year of his contract.

Time for another Hermie drama created by himself... sounds like someone is working on his excuses for leaving....:)

The ridiculous thing about this article is, why is it talking about Herm quiting rather than being fired. Hunt's an absolute fool.

Herm was a losing HC when he got to the Chiefs and now his record is even worse: 54-72 (.429). Four of his last 6 years have been losing seasons. It's insane that Hunt is supportive of such a proven failure.

To me it seems that the young Hunt is banging Hermies wife and doesn't want her leaving the area. Just a theory mind you. ;)

Herm is never going to get a coaching job again. I doubt he will even get a job as a DC. He will be an analyst and that's it. This guy is worse than Kotite.

College might be the place for Herm. It's not about X's and O's there. It's about selling recruits and motivating players. There are definite Pete Carroll parallels.

I should have said NFL. I think you are right about college, but in the NFL level this guy will never get another coaching job. Teams don't even ask for Pete Carroll I believe, although he has had tremendous success in college. Also I don't think he wants to leave the college level, he realizes his limitations now I bet. Hermy might be the same.

Interesting note, I believe either BB, Mangini or Schott actually met with Caroll and discussed coaching. But I don't remember which one haha.

Agreed completely. Who would want somebody who has left two franchises in shambles? As you said in another post, nobody would even want Herm as DC. He's never even been a coordinator before and is lost when it comes to X's and O's and gameplanning. Not exactly what you want in a guy leading a unit.
