Thinking About Rooting For Miami Sunday?

Time to shut up Jets fans

By GREG COTE

gcote@MiamiHerald.com

Anybody who has grown up down here and seen South Florida overrun by transplanted New Yorkers knows that this week -- this Dolphins-Jets game up there Sunday -- takes on a context beyond sports.

We have seen the ''I [Heart] New York'' bumper stickers. We have noted the ubiquitous ''NY'' ball caps. We have heard the way Mets fans at a Marlins game or Jets fans at Dolphin Stadium make themselves known with such rabid bellicosity.

We have wondered why, if you love New York so much, you don't head north and get your [bleepin'] behinds back up there.

Sports, our teams against theirs, have flamed the feeling. Whose team wins is a declaration, a volley in the war of Miami vs. New York.

Dolphins-Jets on Sunday is well in keeping with the best, most bitter rivalry we have with any other city.

Seven of the NFL's dozen playoff spots have been claimed, and now comes Last Chance Sunday for 11 teams -- including the Dolphins and Jets -- who are in the hunt for the final five spots. Meaning 11 coaches want only one thing for Christmas.

''Everything you are fighting for and want is right here,'' as Dallas' Wade Phillips, one of those 11, put it this week. ``All you have to do is go get it.''

Dispassionately, I predict a Jets victory. Which is not the same as hoping for one. I root for South Florida and, in particular, I root for great stories -- and cannot think of a better story than a 1-15 team making the playoffs the next season. Or a better subplot than Chad Pennington returning to beat the team that discarded him in favor of Brett Favre.

The Dolphins and Jets last met with bigger stakes 25 years ago, on Jan. 23, 1983, in a muddy Orange Bowl, for the AFC championship, with a trip to the Super Bowl the prize. Any Dolfan old enough to remember TTBM (The Time Before Marino) might recall that 14-0 Dolphins victory fashioned from a smothering defense. Few who have worn the uniform in 43 franchise seasons have had a greater day than linebacker A.J. Duhe, who intercepted three passes, returning the last one 35 yards through the slop for a touchdown that sealed the victory.

But Sunday's game recalls Miami-New York meetings of a more recent vintage. The mind recalls the 2003 World Series, and a jam-packed but eerily silent Yankee Stadium as Josh Beckett spun a five-hit gem in a 2-0 Marlins victory in the deciding Game 6. The mind recalls delight in knowing the ''NY'' on all those caps stood for ''Next Year'' once again.

Before that, there was the Heat-Knicks rivalry sparked by four consecutive playoff meetings from 1997 to 2000, the latter an epic seven-game series wrought with acrimony and suspensions and ultimately won by the Knicks on Miami's floor, 83-82.

Now, on to Sunday. This is delicious stuff. This is why we love sports.

This is about bragging rights and doing what is at once frustratingly impossible but an eternal dream: shutting up New Yorkers.

Any Jets fans rooting against us don't understand football. Winning is contagious and breeds success. Momentum can change quickly in the NFL, and before you know it, we could be in the mix as a contender.

Look no further than the Giants from last year...this time last year, no one had them doing anything significant, and then something clicked in the final regular season game against the Pats. The rest is history.

I want Mangini gone and I don't want to give up a higher draft pick for Favre. But we will cross that bridge when the time is right. As of right now, I will be wholeheartedly rooting for the Jets to destroy the Fins and for the Pats and/or Ravens to lose.

i wish the raven-jag game was at 1pm. That way if the pats ant ravens won.. i would root for chad.. but alas that is not to be.

i loveeeeeeee chad but i just can't root against my team unless i know it is over...

and then my hatred of the pats comes into play :baby:

so if the pats win and the ravens are blowing at the jags.. well then maybe i will switch to the phins.. it will be interesting to see how the stadium reacts..

by the way.. this whole collapse makes me sick.

It will be real interesting to see if this Jets team comes out with any pride and fire

They are fighting for their playoff lives and possibly Mangini's job. Will they fight or lay down? We will know a lot about the character of this team on Sunday.

They were "fighting" for them last week too

True but they always knew in the back of their heads that they still had a shot in Week 17. Now they HAVE to win. They didn't have to win or be eliminated in Week 16. I don't know, I'm trying to pull something good out of all this. :)

not for nothing Green Gal if the Pats win and the Ravens are blowing out the Jags, the stadium will be mostly empty with only Fish fans remaining.. and for the record there will be a ton of them there this week

i will be there ;) i dont leave till the last second ticks off.. and even then i wait till most of the players leave the field. i know i am a dum-dum.

i was there at the very last second of the denver game .. and i was frickin cold and wet and then had to take a bus to the frickin izod center because even though i had a parkign pass..i had to park there after a frickin 4 hour drive from ct. ( am i bitter.. nah ;) )

I love how this punk conveniently left out the FACT that Don "Scumbucket" Shula cheated to win that AFC Championship Game.

Things getting a little testy in the Zulia household ;)

Just a little. :)

Since the pain of last week, I have come to a new place. I am rooting for EVERYTHING to happen.

- If the Bills/Jets win... great I get to go to a home playoff game (first ever)

- If the Pats/Jets win... great I don't have to hear crap from the 10,000 Dolphin fans in the stadium.

- If the Dolphins win... The wife is happy and we might go down to Florida to see a game

It is better than hoping and praying for what you know won't happen.

For me that's beating the Jets. I know it won't happen so I'm trying my hardest not to get too excited about the possibilities.

Anyway it works out, here's to a good game on Sunday BZ

lol, I know the feeling but let yourself get exited. You know your team should win this game, especially with the choke job this gutless, pathetic excuse for a team has displayed the last month. If you guys don't win I will be shocked. Shocked!

Nice to know you guys feel the same way.

Again, if the Pats win and the Dolphins win I MIGHT be able to root for the Dolphins in the playoffs since officially, they didn't keep us out of the playoffs as opposed to the Pats who I hope burn in hell for the rest of eternity.

Uhhh, have you seen the bull crap that happens when our teams play? Every stupid, crazy play ends up going for the Jets. What is it, 20 out of the last 24 games you've won? 5 in a row? Not to mention the NFL Network is REAIRING the meltdown game from 2000 tonight :mad0259: Why? Why would they do that? Why would they re-air bad mojo? I swear, where's that producer :elmer:

Believe me, it's shaping up to be a classic Jets victory on Sunday, and that's fine, I've had a great season and I know I can look forward to next year.

I can not make this any clearer- there is no way I will ever root for Miami= especially we are playing them- wake up people.

Thank you Frank! I am starting to get nuts here listening to all these Chad Fans ,Chad crossed over to the (Darkside) Dolphins ,so I am hoping he crashes & burns on SUN. and I am not looking for 1 of those 15 round go to the score card ,could go either way fights either ,I want this to be 1 of those the favorite (THE JETS ) this game walks across the ring after the bell rings for round 1 rares back with that right hand slams the opponent (Chad) with 1 shot and knocks him down & out 12 secs. into the fight, this is what I want to see!

This is a bunch of BS. I don't care what happens with the Pats, I will be rooting like hell for the Jets to destroy Miami and for the Jets to make the playoffs. Anything can happen. In 1986, the Jets lost their last 5 games and were one stupid roughing the passer call from going to the AFC Championship game. If a Jets win results in the Pats winning the division, so be it. I will just root for the Pats to lose in the playoffs. Hopefully the Jets have some friggin pride and play balls to wall on Sunday. Whatever happened to "NOT IN MY HOUSE"?

It's too bizarre to imagine cheering for those pukes. As for their QB - I wouldn't piss on his head is his hair was on fire. He was a loadstone here and will be one again.
