WEST POINT, N.Y. -- West Point officials say Cal Poly's Rich Ellerson will become Army's football coach.

Ellerson's appointment to replace the fired Stan Brock was announced Friday on the U.S. Military Academy Web site.

Cal Poly made it to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs four times under Ellerson and was ranked as high as No. 3 this season. Ellerson was 56-34 in eight years at Cal Poly after being defensive coordinator at Arizona from 1997 to 2000. He began his college coaching career nearly 30 years ago.

Brock was fired just days after the Black Knights completed their season with a 34-0 loss to archrival Navy. He compiled a 6-18 record in two years as coach.

Army hasn't had a winning record since 1996.

Considering the limitations, this seems like a good hire. Army needs to play a more manageable schedule for a few years while they rebuild.

It does look like a good hire.

He runs an option type offense as well.

They also have a relatively easy schedule.
