Dial-up question

Yes, I know, dial-up.

My boyfriend's mother lives in a 60+ community (classic Boca Raton, LOL), and she needs her some internetz. She's not too computer savvy, so she does not care about dial-up, dsl, cable, etc. Boca doesn't have fios yet. She just needs to check email, check her banking, and read news.

Anyways, she asked me to help her out with the internet connection for her, and she doesn't feel like paying a lot. Comcast Cable internet is like 40 bucks a month, DSL isn't available in her neighborhood, so dial-up is pretty much the only option (only 10 bucks a month). Times are tough so she's cutting expenses.

Here's the thing...I can't connect for her. Tried getting on PeoplePC for her...Registered her up with an account. Her computer is kinda older (but not bad, still quick and its xp sp2). It has a built-in modem. BUT, I keep getting an error message trying to connect. Tech support says the modem is bad.

What do I do?

so i go to best buy and i told the associate my situation.

me: "so i think i might need a new dial-up modem"

him: "you don't have high-speed internet"

me: "no, i do, it's for my boyfriends mom. i think she needs one"

him: "she doesn't have high-speed internet?"

me: "no"

him: "why?"

me: "can i just get the friggin modem please?"

it was 50 bucks. so i said hell no, and went back over to her house. i unplugged the phone cord from the computer, restarted, plugged it back in, and sure enough it worked.

friggin' dial-up.

You should have checked that the phone line was connected securely to the modem and to the wall jack. ;) Glad it worked out for you.
