I have ****ing jury duty

Jets Babe

Recommended Posts

As if this weekend could have gotten worse...TOMORROW, 8 am, I have to drive up to West Palm for jury duty....

Can I skip it due to being mentally unstable over the Jets losing?

You hate criminals and insurance companies and CANNOT BE FAIR. No matter how often an attorney or judge breaks your chops about "Can you put those feelings aside and be fair?" the answer is NO PHVCKIN' WAY.

Attorneys exercise the Voir Dire before trial begins, in which they screen potential jurors.

Basically what you need to do is voice a strong opinion about something that the attorneys do not like. You will be out.

Of course serving might be a good distraction.

I served on a case for almost 3 weeks and found it pretty educational on how our justice system works. It's worth doing once in life. I probably wouldn't do it again though.

3 weeks? i have to go back to work on tuesday...eff that. i hope its just a one-day thing.

Just listen to what the case is about and then form an opinion that the attorneys will not like.

They do not want jurors who will hurt their case.

Seriously though, it might be a good distraction, plus its our civic duty.

Jury Duty is awesome. You get out of work and you get home early. Oops....you're student. Sorry. Sleeping late would have been nice.

How to get out of it? If your panel is picked, they ask you a series of questions that will determine if you are jury pool material for the particular case you get called for. So, for example, if it's a drunk driving case - all you need to say is that you became an active member of MADD after your best friend was killed in a DD accident by a scumbag. If it's a BB case, say your best friend was killed in a botched buglary attempt at a local gas station, if it's a toxic waste case, say that your best friend got cancer from living near a toxic waste area in Kansas and you are now an active member of greenpeace.....you get the drift.

I wouldn't worry 'bout it too much, Erica. If it's going to be a long case, your student status should suffice. Plus, you're an Italian chick with definite opinions. You will NEVER get picked for a serious case. That's not a dig either. It's fact.

If it's a case about a hit and run, you tell them about your friend who got a broken leg in a hit and run.

If it's a case about cocaine, you tell them about your college roommate who had to be taken to the hospital after doing too much coke.

Attorney's don't like people who they are afraid might bring personal experience into their decisions.

Tell them you're in law school. Lawyers never get picked to sit on a jury.

If you pull the whole "I hate N....s" things you could be held in contempt of court. Best thing you can do is when they ask you about something relevant to the case tell them you have a bias because the same thing happened to your aunt. I was on the panel for a slip and fall case and I told the Attorneys that I could be fair because "My father died that way." Which was only wishful thinking my father is sadly still alive.

i got out of it!!! just got home.

basically the case was civil, and it had to do with a property lawsuit. my parents were actually involved in a similar case a couple years back, and i told them that i would be biased to the situation because of what happened with my parents.
