Will Bill Parcells become a free agent -- again?

Bill Parcells' contract with the Dolphins allows him to leave the team if owner Wayne Huizenga sells his majority share.

It's a possibility, hinging on whether Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga's sale of his majority ownership of the team goes through, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen. When Parcells joined the Dolphins as executive vice president of football operations last year, his deal included a onetime out clause that would allow him to walk away, with the rest of his $12 million guaranteed contract fully paid, no strings attached, if Huizenga were to sell the team. Earlier this year, Huizenga agreed to sell 95 percent of the Dolphins to New York developer and team part-owner Stephen Ross. Huizenga hopes to close on the deal by early January to ensure that the capital gains taxes on the sale remain at 15 percent before President-elect Barack Obama takes the oath of office Jan. 20, Mortensen reported. Parcells' contract specifically states only Huizenga can be in authority over him. Once Ross officially becomes majority owner, Parcells has to notify Ross within 30 days that he intends to exercise his walk-away clause and collect the full balance of $9 million, Mortensen reported. At that time, Parcells would be a free agent. And any team that wants his services would not owe compensation to the Dolphins, according to the report. Among the teams sources say are on Parcells' radar are the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and the Oakland Raiders. However, if Parcells' son-in-law, New England Patriots vice president Scott Pioli, is interested in any of those jobs, Parcells is unlikely to wind up with that team, Mortensen reported. Parcells could negotiate with Ross to extend his opt-out clause by one year. But as presently written, the clause doesn't extend after one season, according to the report.

Is Huizenga that completely retarded? How does a guy who actively wants to sell his team (and openly admits it) bring in a great football mind like parcells, and tell him that if he sells next year his whole 12 million dollar contract will be paid and he will be released. Give me one good reason why parcells would NOT exercise this contract, pocket a giant load of cash and go sign another contract with someone else for another load of cash which he will get after this huge 1 year turnaround.

Ya know, now that i think of it, Huizenga might not be stupid at all. I would think an 11-5 division champion in the playoffs would command much more than a 1-15 laughing stock team, so go ahead and invest whatever you need to get you a good year, right a crap contract like he did and saddle the next guy with that problem. lol

You guys are unbelievable.

Do you really think the new owner will let Parcells leave? I'm positive that the new owner wil do, pretty much whatever Parcells wants in order to keep him here. Besides, Parcells has had a home here since before he was with the Dolphins, does it really seem feasable that he would leave. No.

Our situation is perfect and exactly what Parcells wants, complete controll over everything and no meddlesome owner butting in. Not to mention the beautiful weather and lack of a state income tax.

Yeah, I can see why he'd want to go back to the New York market

At least he would not have to deal with the dumb native South Florida sports fans:bag:

Parcells would be stupid not to at least exercise the opt-out clause. Whether he has a new contract already setup to sign after becoming a free agent, we'll find out afterwards. Once he opts-out, he's fair game. Maybe he'll come back here for more money, I wouldn't mind a bidding war for the guy. Maybe he wants the glory of winning in a large commercial market, where the stadium's sold out every week.

He might stay, he might not. But we'd welcome him with open arms. No way he ignores the opt-out with free money, though.

You know what is an even more perfect situation than he has in florida? Getting paid the same amount of money and NOT having to work a single day. You know what is even better than that? Getting paid the same amount of money and not having to work their and getting to go somewhere else of his choosing and getting paid another 12 million dollars thereby doubling his pay for the same amount of work. And something even still more perfect, getting all that and the added bonus of winning it all in NYC and walking down the Canyon of Heroes. I am pretty sure Florida has nothing as cool as that, the closest they come is old people on their crappy houseboats with gaudy christmas lights having a "parade" on the intercoastal for christmas, lol.

What will the new owner do, match whatever offer Parcells gets from the Jets/Browns/Lions/whoever else IN ADDITION to the money he already gets? Say the Jets offer him 20 million, do you think the new owner gives him that PLUS the 12 million he is already signed for? lol, i think not.

I don't know that he will end up here, but I am pretty sure he will not be with the fish next year. It ain't like this guy has shown much allegiance when people DIDN'T give him a golden parachute like this.

Wow, what a success story Bill Parcells has been. He's a certified winner, to the point where we are literally wishing for people to sell their company just so we can get him.

I'd rather have him doing what he's doing now if he comes to the Jets, just off the strengh of how well the Phins did this year and still get Cowher or Rex as HC.
