10 AM Presser, Tannenbaum, Johnson but...

...no Mangini. As per FAN, the email to the media about this hastily-scheduled press conference went out about 2:30AM. Supposedly it says Mangini's future won't be discussed, but also he won't be there.

Speculation on my part-he's out. And Johnson, if he's going to lose out on Cowher, wants a chance to talk to Spagnoulo.

He can't talk to Spagnoulo until the Giants are eliminated.

Not true; because the Jints have a bye this week, Spagnoulo can and will interview with teams this week. Assistants are also available when their teams are eliminated or the week before the Super Bowl.

Really? I wasn't aware of that.

They changed those rules a few years ago when a few coordinators were losing jobs because the teams were always in the playoffs. For some reason I think the main complaint was Marvin Lewis having so few chances for a job, but I'm not sure if he was the guy or it was someone else.

I think Mangini is safe. if this idiot (Woody) put up with Herm's idiocy for forever it doesn't surprise me if he keeps Mangini.

How are they gonna sell those psl's now? LOL! HAHAHAHA! LOLOLOLOLOL

He only put up with Herm because Herm had injury problems (Chad) in 2003, his third year after making the playoffs his first two years, including one divsion championship. You can't fire a guy with two playoff apperances and one division title in three years, the one year not making it due to your star QB going down. That is the only reason Woody hung onto him.

Looks like he very well could be out. I can't see any other reason why Woody would call a press conference.

Of course knowing the Jets Woody probably gave him a five year extension.

It could be Monday mourning for Mangini

December 29, 2008

In another sign that coach Eric Mangini is in extreme danger of being fired, the Jets announced at 2:40 a.m. this morning that owner Woody Johnson - and not Mangini - will address the media at 10 a.m. at the team's facility in Florham Park, N.J.

This is a highly unusual move by Johnson, suggesting he already has made a decision on Mangini's fate. Johnson will appear at the news conference with GM Mike Tannenbaum. "Time not determined yet for Coach and players," the Jets' announcement reads, not mentioning Mangini by name.

Usually, Mangini is the first to deliver the post-mortem of the season, but these circumstances are different. In the aftermath of Sunday's season-ending loss to the Dolphins, Johnson was angrier than he'd ever been seen in public, putting Mangini on notice by refusing to give him a vote of confidence.

Asked if Mangini would be back in 2009, Johnson sniffed, "We're going to look at that. I'm going to get my guys together and we'll look at that." He said he hoped to have Mangini status, and that of QB Brett Favre, resolved this week.

This week might be today for Mangini.

I dont think Cowher will be coaching this year. If he was going to choose between the Jets and Browns he would take the Jets.

I fear this press conference is going to be nothing more than Woody giving a timetable for his decisions and talking about what his expectations were for this season and how the SOJ's fell short.

Cowher will not be the coach. He will demand to much power. Tannenbaum is a good GM and should not have to relinquish any power.

Tannenbaum already relies on Bradway and others on personnel, and is mostly a numbers guy. He's not out there evaluating Talent.

Bring Cowher in, let him have final say on personnel (I think all coaches should anyway). Tannenbaum can handle the contracts/etc, and keep his title.

I kind of want Holmgren over Cowher, but I'll take either.

It would be a demotion for Tannenbaum. He did a wonderful job bringing free agents this year and the trades in the draft to get Revis, Harris and Keller

That wouldn't necessitate a press conference. He said enough yesterday about his intention to make decisions this week. Woody has to be at least slightly panicky about the new stadium and the financing thereof (ie, PSLs). He is looking at the prospect of no Favre (and a lost season in terms of developing a starting QB) and a HC who is far from beloved by the fan base. I think he's firing Mangini.

No, I don't think it would. He'd retain his title. He'd be in the same position he was this year. I'm sure Mangini had say on personnel, so Cowher/whoever would too.

Let's not get carried away in singing the praises of the deals for Harris and Keller. Also, let's not forget guys like Furgeson and Gholston.

Ferguson, you know our LT. Decent player, but drafted at #4?

All Tannenbaum has proven is when he has a top 10 pick, he follows "consensus". He did it with Ferguson and Gholston. How did it work out? We have a LT who is OK, not great, and we have a 21M guaranteed guy who doesn't play.

I am not sure Tannenbaum will accept a hollow title.

Its all up for debate but D'brick was a good pick and just what the team needed at the time. Gholston yes looking now was not worthy of sixth pick but is to early to give up on him.

Well, at the time that people normally get fired, (first morning after the season ends), the owner is giving a press conference and Tannenbaum is going to be up on the platform with him and Mangini is not.

These facts alone pretty much spell out who's going to stay and who's going to go.
