Cimini: Mangini never wanted Favre

Hey Woody! Where's the plan?

December 30, 2008

Some teams, like the Giants, Colts and Patriots (except this year), begin the postseason by preparing for a playoff game. The Jets begin by looking for a coach.

The years go by, the faces change, but one thing never changes: the Jets remain a mess.

Everybody deserves blame in this latest debacle: Owner Woody Johnson, former coach Eric Mangini and QB Brett Favre.

Mangini never wanted Favre, it was learned yesterday, but he welcomed the future Hall of Famer and tried to make it work. I don't think GM Mike Tannenbaum wanted him, either, but Johnson, trying to market his new stadium, was infatuated with Favre and essentially told Tannenbaum, "Go get him." So he did, adding a last-minute wild card and changing the way they played offense.

But, hey, they sold tons of "4" jerseys.

In the end, Favre cost Mangini his job, throwing nine interceptions in the final five games. You name me a coach that could overcome that many mistakes.

That said, Mangini deserves his share of the blame. Under his watch, the team got lackadaisical, didn't improve in key areas, made too many silly mistakes and let inferior teams (see: West Coast) beat them in money games.

But did he deserve to be fired? If Johnson has Bill Cowher up his sleeve, then, yes, that would represent an upgrade over Mangini. But that doesn't appear to be the case. The Jets are interested in Cowher, I'm told, but their current power structure (see: Tannenbaum as the No. 1 football guy) isn't going to work for Cowher. So, in the end, they'll probably end up hiring an unproven assistant.

In the end, Johnson, suddenly acting like a football guy, caved to the media and fan pressure. If he truly believed in Mangini as much as he said he did, if he was considering a long-term extension only five weeks ago, he would've come out late in the season (maybe after the Seattle loss) and given Mangini a vote of confidence. It wouldn't have stopped the fans from spewing their bile, but it would've stopped the speculation.

On Sunday night, after the Miami loss, a visibly upset Johnson told a few reporters he was going to take some time to make a decision, that it wasn't going to be a heat-of-the-moment call. A little while later, like maybe an hour or two, he decided to fire Mangini. If that's not heat-of-the-moment, what is?

Johnson was appalled by the late-season collapse. His signs the checks, so he can do whatever he wants. Right now, he looks like an impulsive guy consumed with building a stadium and selling luxury suites. Where's the plan?

Good article by Rich. And it is what a lot of us have feared\been saying for a long time now. They have officially stopped making football moves. And they now are run by the Marketing Department.

BUT -- the past 40 years of football moves have sucked. So maybe this isn't the worst thing in the world.

If the can get Cowher then it is + 1 for the Marketing department. If not, then this move (firing Mangini) should never have been made.

Regardless the Jets remain a mess. They had a coach that fixed what Herm broke. And now that is gone. They better make sure that doesn't result in yet another step backwards.

You did it again! Another oxymoron..

"Good Article" and "Rich"

the 2 don't exist in the same sentence.

Then why didnt Eric Mangini the head coach bench Favre after he became ineffective and starting costing the JETS games. Isnt that what a head coach is supposed to do.

Mangini could have also blew this up in the media if he felt so inclined to do so. With that being said. Im happier today knowing Eric "the puppet" Mangini is outta here.

Exactly. He had no trouble throwing a rookie TE under the bus for dropping a pass.

He doesn't have to worry about Favre now.

I call BS. Who exactly did Mangini want?

Pennington? The guy he benched last year and forced into a TC competition.

Clemens? The guy who showed nothing last year and looked terrible in TC.

Ratliff? Complete unknown, no starting reps.

Ainge? Rookie, looked terrible until the last preseason game.

Pretty obvious he didn't want Favre. Favre's style didn't fit into The Mageen's master plan for the offense - a variation of the highly effective point producing machine being finely honed from 07.

So he played along for awhile and tried to teach Favre a few things that didn't work too well. Then he said f'k it - roll some of your own (Az game) and then had to snatch back the power and control because after all - he's The Mageen . Don't think Favre doesnt know how to say f'k it too.

Net Net - The festering pyle of sh!t we just all lived through.

That pretty much sums up this pathetic season, buddy. Good job.

This season so reminds me of 1994. I hope Favre retires and we can just start new all over.

Lets just hope the coming years aren't like 1995-1996 :smilies2_puke:

Mangini didn't know what he wanted except for cheesburgers.

I can think of a bunch of coaches that don't make this a bad move.

Cowher

Holmgren

Mariucci

Parcells

Mariucci is the worst choice for the JETS. He only keeps Favre here but Favre needs someone to rein in him and Mooch ain't the guy for the job. The other three may have a ring but I question their commitment to our team long term...

Exactly. Not to mention that he was giddy as a school girl at the first press conference and named his kid after him, sure sounds like a guy who didn't want him..

The NY media is stirring up trouble and out to tear down Favre. Which is actually a good thing cause he'll probably retire

It's comical.

The NY media hated Mangini, but now some of them are calling him a "scapegoat" and Favre is the real culprit.

NY Media vs. Favre.

NY Media vs. Favre.

Attacking Favre is a way to make a name for yourself. Particularly when their golden haired Chadilocks won the division. The same guys who blamed Mangini for Penny last year are blaming Favre for Mangini this year.. lol..

What's funny is that it's very likely the Dolphins only win 5 games next year but you won't hear a single mea culpa out of any of them. They'll blame Sparano!

The N.Y media couldnt wash Brett Favres dirty jock. They loved him when he signed and was winning and abandoned him like a case of the plague when things took a sour turn. Many of the N.Y media couldnt deliver newspapers in cities like Chicago or Boston. With that being said now you know why many players shun the media.

Screw the media and the **** they print just to sell a paper...........

I think I am in the minority with you that would agree Mariucci would be a good move.

Mariucci is a great offensive coach. Leon Washington would explode in his offense. My problem with Mooch is that he just seems like such a short term solution. He would be here for Favre and what else Im not sure. When things got bad in Detroit and he butted heads with his GM he just quit on the team because he knew he could collect a paycheck at home for a few years and yuck it up with Deion on TV. That really worries me about him as does the fact that he is more than just a few years removed from coaching.

HAHAHA..NY Jets = Oakland East...they'll be no Cowher-Parcells-Holmgren coming..Mariucci??...hahahahahaha...This was a huge mistake letting Mangini ..f**kin huge. Players support for EM was big and if Woody wasn't signing there paychecks you would really hear it...same ole jets.

Does Mangini want to be the Coach to end Farve's streak. Probably not and do you really think we had a better option on the Bench. I would say no to that too, for if that was the case we would not have gotten farve in the first place.

If his goal was to hire Cowher, and Cleveland was going to commence talks with him right away, then it was pointless to wait a week with Mangini.

Now it turns out Cowher isn't interested in the Browns. But if he had interest in both teams and only one had a coaching vacancy at the time, it would be pretty foolish to wait on announcing Mangini's fate so as not to give the impression that it was an impulsive move.
