Mariucci

If Favre returns, Steve Mariucci should get a call from the Jets. He is a Paul Holmgren disciple and can install the offense the Favre played his best and is most comfortable in. Favre also was miffed at Green Bay for not going with Mariucci when they needed a coach in 2006. I realize the whole world doesn't revolve around Favre, but it makes a lot of sense to make him comfortable if he's back, and the guy is as good as anyone available not named Cowher.

Favre is 39. Do you really like Mooch for this year and the future going forward when Favre realizes its time to hang it up for good? Do we still like Mooch as the head coach? I'll pass...he's in it for all the wrong reasons...Favre + cash = mooch on the sidelines again. I'd rather go with the "hot coordinator" route...

Can someone explain to me why has he been out of the league for awhile now with so many openings if he was so excellent?

Because he coached the Lions last. Prior to that he was a hot up and coming coach. He also only wanted a head coaching job and did not want to work as a coordinator again.

True.

He won 15 games in 3 years with the Lions. His replacement won 10 games in 3 years.

He would definitely need a strong DC (maybe Romeo Crennel). Still I hope they do better than this in replacing Mangini.

At the end of the day I agree I do not want Mooch. But I could see where with the right staff around him he would make a lot of sense. Heck Bill Walsh chose him as the head coach if I'm not mistaken so I think the guy can coach. Again with the right DC (Romeo is a good one) and even some all star position coaches. You could also promote Callahan to OC. He was a good OC in Oakland.

I'm not sure who Paul Holmgren is, but Mike Holmgren is the Super Bowl Winning coach.

He has had more seasons UNDER .500 than over.

No thanks.

You have to discount what he did in Detroit. Matt Millen, enough said.

He was 96-57 with SF, including using Siefert's players, then rebuilding, then using his own players. He runs the WCO, and will use #4 effectively.

If we can't get the Big Show, I'd prefer Mooch. I'd require he bring in a strong defensive mind. I'd like Crennel to be honest. As a DC, he's STRONG. However, he's a good friend of Mangini and may not want to come.

Mariucci's final season in San Francisco was 2002. The 49ers won the NFC West with a 10-6 record and beat the New York Giants in a controversial wild-card game, posting the second-biggest comeback playoff victory in NFL history. However, they were crushed 31-6 by the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the divisional round. On January 15, 2003, the 49ers fired Mariucci, reportedly after the coach lost a power struggle with general manager Terry Donahue.[1] As San Francisco's coach, he compiled a 60-43 (.583) record, while his teams earned playoff berths four times.

Mariucci was named the Lions' 22nd head coach on February 4, 2003, and was fired on November 28, 2005. He compiled a 15-28 record during that span. The decision to fire Mariucci came after a 27-7 loss on national television on Thanksgiving Day to the Atlanta Falcons.

That includes playoff games, and that's averaging 10-6 for six seasons.

If you don't think that is impressive, consider that every few years you are destined to have an "injury year". That is when several key players go down and you are playing depleted. These happen every third or fourth year, usually.

So if you can average 10-6 for six years including your "injury years", that means that you had at least a year or two where you were way, way above 10-6. Looks like a pretty good record from here.

As for Detroit, at this point we can discount anyone's experiences there.

Holy Crap, HAH. For a second there I thought I saw Marinelli. Could be because I shot myself in the face on the way home from the game.

....yet amazingly, your fingers are at their sassy best, texting form. Go figure! The self-face shooting does explain your spelling though.....

Its funny you mentioned Siefert...Siefert and Mooch did well in SF because the 49ers were still a relatively strong organization....when both left their true talents were displayed...Siefert 16-31 in Carolina with a 1-15 season and Mooch was 15-28 in Detroit...simliar results once they left the 49ers...

BTW...Wikipedia had this thought when I researched for Mooch's record...

"During the Brett Favre/Green Bay Packers dispute throughout the 2008 off season, Favre discredited the Packers for not interviewing Mariucci for their head coaching job in 2006. Mariucci, who previously worked with Favre, was figured to be a great candidate for the West Coast Offense style played in Green Bay."

Make us kind of wonder who put Mooch to the JETS theory out to the media...and exactly what their motivation was...
