Mangini. He has his faults, but he's a lot better than Herm.

If the Jets hadn't simulataneously forced Brett Favre down Mangini's throat and handed the fish their MVP, this season would've been a lot different. And Mangini would be the team's undisputed coach next year.

In terms of building a team, Mangini was much better. Herm inherited a talented team built by Parcells and left us with nothing. Mangini inherited Herm's nothing team and left us with one of the most talented rosters in our history. Of course GM's come into play here, but Mangini was heavily involved in building up our roster.

Mangini is a much better X's and O's coach, but he lacks instincts and the ability to adjust. Herm was little more than a cheerleader and completely relied on his assistants to do the brunt of the work.

I would say Mangini may be pound for pound (pun intended) the better coach, but Herm had more success w/o question. And history (if anyone cares to look at this era of jets history) will look more fondly on the Herm years than the Mangini years.

Dead on.

I will break that down into two questions.

Who was a better HC for the New York Jets? Herm. He won more, did more and got more out of his players with less talent.

Who WILL be the better coach in NFL history? Mangini. He needs another 10+ years and he will be great. Less thinking, more gut.

I remember seeing Mangini on a list, voted by the players, as the #2 coach you'd least like to play for.

Couple that with the Spygate thing, and I'm not sure Mangini is ever given another job, let alone the 10+ years you prescribe.

Mangini. What, 'cos Herm started out 1-4 and backdoored into the playoffs a few times, instead of finishing 1-4 and not make the playoffs, he's a better coach? Get real.

Herm never missed the playoffs when his QB wasn't hurt...

I'm surprised to see Herm running away with the victory in this poll.

Herm has run two separate franchises into the ground. In both cases, he inherited a team that was already built for him. His football IQ is simply limited, and he was totally dependent on the coaching staff around him to do most of the game planning and preparation. He couldn't manage a clock, and he couldn't keep his roster competitive for long periods of time.

Mangini certainly has his faults, but in a vacuum and from a pure football knowledge perspective, it's not even close.
