Boland on SportsCenter: "It's not over yet" [MERGED]

Erik Boland (Newsday beat writer, the best out there) was just on SportsCenter, and he had the following tidbits:

-A change has taken place in the organization since yesterday's presser, when Woody said that a coach-GM would be "too much for one person"

-A team source told Boland that Tannenbaum "will do whatever is best for the franchise." Though he didn't elaborate, it was implied that "whatever is best" might include ceding some authority over personnel decisions

-Cowher's reps are "receptive" to at least talking to Jets--said that there's a "long way to go" before any sort of deal could be done, but that Cowher to the Jets "is not dead in the water" and "not over yet"

-No timeframe on a potential meeting between Cowher and the Jets

Finally, in non-Cowher news: the Jets have received permission to talk to Spagnuolo and plan to interview him soon. Boland said the Jets like Spags' high emotion and aggressive defensive approach.

FWIW...

I hope with Spagnuolo they actually like what he brings to the table.

It seems to me we hired Mangini because he was meticulous and emotionless, the anti-Herm.

Then, Mangini isn't aggressive and emotionless, so we need a guy who's aggressive and emotional.

I hope it's not just a matter of getting the opposite of Mangini.

I'm hoping for once we can find a guy that can fit our franchise and our players who are currently here. Finding a guy who is the "opposite" of the guy you just add yields only short term results. You really need someone who the players can respect and can push the right buttons.

The door to the New York Jets' opening might not be closed for Bill Cowher just yet after all.

A high ranking Jets official told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the team is still planning to speak to Cowher about its vacant head coaching job. No time or place for the interview has been set, but the official says the Jets would be willing to do "whatever is necessary" to land Cowher if he is truly interested in taking the job.

Cowher plans to speak publicly for the first time about the Jets' opening and other coaching opportunities during CBS' wild-card pregame show on Sunday, a source told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand.

Initially, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported Cowher told the Jets he was not interested because he wanted his own personnel person. The Jets official's response indicates the team is willing to let Cowher replace current general manager Mike Tannenbaum with his own candidate.

A Jets source also said Tannenbaum says he's willing to adjust his position to accommodate Cowher.

Cowher has told friends the Jets job interested him for several reasons. First, Cowher would love to coach in the New York market. Second, two of his daughters are either going to school or working in the New York-New Jersey area.

If Cowher doesn't take an open NFL head coaching job this offseason, he does plan to coach in 2010, sources told Clayton. In 2009, though, he is willing to return only if every situation was right for him. He wanted to have a two-year break from coaching to be with family and recharge.

Last weekend, Cowher met with Browns owner Randy Lerner, who asked him what it would take financially for him to be the Browns' head coach. Having a close relationship with the Rooney family in Pittsburgh and still wanting more time with the family, Cowher didn't give Lerner a price, and said no.

Cowher recently extended his contract with CBS for another season.

Told ya' so.

Good call. F Clayton and his BS jumping the gun reports.

It looks more and more like this is going to happen. The Jets have basically come out and said they are willing to give Cowher a blank check and complete control. It's going to be a very tough offer to refuse for him.

Thanks. It made no sense that Tannenbaum would somehow be a deal breaker. The guy's a negotiator for crying out loud.

I wrote this in the Clayton thread, but it makes sense here:

I hate to defend Clayton, but his story is accurate because his "multiple sources" were likely only Cowher sources taken at a certain time.

Mortensen's "sources" were both Cowher AND Jet sources. Note that Clayton doesn't site a single Jet source, while Mortensen does. Also, it's obvious that Mortensen's sources were contacted AFTER Clayton's article.

Bottom line is that Clayton' story was accurate, but only at a certain time and it should not have been taken as a definitive statement in a fluid situation.

It was more misleading than accurate. You don't go ahead and make definitive statements about the whole thing falling through unless it's really over. The report could have easily been worded a little differently and given it much more credibility.

Honestly the only guy in the national media that when I hear him report something and I believe it is Jay Glazer. Clayton is messing with my fragile emotional state right now.

Lol..

I mean, it's so obvious that Clayton releasing something this early was at worst a bad sign, but most likely baseless rumors, yet it's so hard not to go bonkers at this slightest hint of bad news.

First thing I thought yesterday when I heard how quickly Mangini was shot was that Cowher was coming, I'm sticking with that..

That's definitely what I'm hoping the FO has in mind. I swear I read somewhere that some website was going to keep track of all the wrong "breaking stories" that Mort and Clayton reported. Anyways I think that's a case of our ADD society, a lot of is responsible is due to the internet and our constant craving for information.

I want Cowher, and quite frankly if anyone can get it done I think it's Tannenbaum.

I'm sure plenty of you are like me and most of your friends are Giants fans.

Do yourselves a favor right now:

Call them on the phone, tell them the Cowher talks are dead, and they're going to interview Spags. The 10 seconds of sheer agony is totally worth the effort of making the call. Trust me.

Believe it or not, most of my friends are Dolphin fans...I'd rather tell them that we're interviewing Parcells.

True. It was misleading, just like Florio's take.

You're 100% correct, Clayton should not have made a definitive statement.

All my friends who are GIANTS fans and are in the post season have said numerous times the JETS can only enter the post season in the news with bull**** like this and never as a playoff team. They wish Spags well if he chooses to leave the GIANTS and know dam well the JETS dont have the defensive players the GIANTS do.

Well if that's your friends' assessments, then I don't want him.

Any fool can see the JETS dont have the defensive linemen or lbs as talented as the GIANTS. Its a no brainer. Who would you expect to fulfill the role of a pass rusher on the JETS that would equal the talent the GIANTS have...........

I don't want another young, unproven coach who gets a look due to his coordinator skills on a strong team.

I want Cowher. He showed proven success with a team that marched to the beat of his drum.

I agree, I'm not excited in the least by Spagnuola. The Giants D works because they have a fierce pass rush, Their secondary blows and without the rush, they would look like...the Jets! I wouldn't mind him as a D coordinator but not a HC

Yeah. The Giants are able to rush 4 guys and put all sorts of pressure on the QB-can we do that? We are lucky to get close with 6 guys.

If that wasn't so sad, it would be really, really funny.

If you look at Jenkins in the first Buffalo game, he was flicking guys off his arms like flies. Totally awesome - but it only lasted about five minutes total when you look at the entire season.

He was hurt, though. No question.

I do not know-he seemed to wear down as the season progressed- yet we gave him blows during games in the course of the season-if you notice teams starting running to the ends and made yardage at the end of the season though.

I thought I saw somewhere that he has a herniated disc in his back and something about his hips. The downside of being a slob, but man, was I ever excited about that slob acquisition. There I was, foaming at the mouth that it would turn Harris and Pace loose. Gawd, why am I even going here?! It's done.
