BP
Schottenheimer returning to Cleveland? Marty Schottenheimer | Chargers</STRONG> | Interested: Browns? The Cleveland Browns are formulating a plan that ultimately could lead to the return of Marty Schottenheimer as their coach for the 2009 season, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. The Browns would also be open to considering Bill Cowher if he sends stronger signals that he's ready to return, sources said. Schottenheimer, 65, went 44-27 as the Browns' head coach from 1984 to 1988. He last coached with the Chargers in 2006

124
Well, that would suck. If Cowher doesn't want the job, Marty is the guy. Get Marty in here dammit. Do whatever it takes if Bill doesn't want the job. The guy can win and get us to become a consistent playoff team year after year after year, something nobody has ever been able to do with the Jets. Then after 2-3-4 years when he's ready to walk away we can find someone who can push us over the top into the Super Bowl, unless Marty can get us there somehow. 2006 the players screwed him, for once he didn't screw himself, even Patriots fans, well at least the ones I know personally, agree to that. Irish Jet
It would make the Browns competitive though and if that's what they're looking for it's a great hire. He's an great coach in that regard, like Parcells, in turning around a crappy team. Wouldn't want him on the Jets though. Maybe if we were coming of a 3-4 win season. Lets look at 1997, against hey, John Elway and the Broncos. Yes KC was home, yes. Wonderful. Hey guess what, Marty wins. Marty makes it respectable. We as Jets fans have ZERO right to bitch about making the playoffs every year, something guys like Cowher & Marty usually do. The Jets have never done that consistently, NEVER. Get Marty in here for 2 or 3 yearrs and then pass it off when we're ready for a Super Bowl run, or maybe he can get us there, you never know. 2006 was on his players, the last "choke". What were you, 9 at the time? Here's a recap Joe BRONCS FIND ELWAY TO WIN CHIEFS PROVE NOT SO SMARTY BY GARY MYERS Monday, January 5th 1998, 2:03AM KANSAS CITY All the misery was about to end for Marty Schottenheimer, a huge payback for all the heartache John Elway has caused him in the playoffs. The Chiefs had the ball. They were down four. They were moving. And Elway was on the sidelines. But then Elvis Grbac proved he was no Elway in crunch time, inexplicably throwing into the end zone instead of for a first down, and the Chiefs were prematurely gone from the playoffs. Again. One moment, the nearly 80,000 fans who jammed Arrowhead Stadium were in a frenzy. The next they were deathly quiet. The misery lives on and the Broncos, 14-10 winners over the Chiefs in yesterday's intense divisional playoff battle, move on to next Sunday's AFC Championship Game in Pittsburgh. "I'm disappointed," said Schottenheimer, 5-11 in the playoffs. "Anybody who's in this situation right now working as hard as we did to get to where we got, it's hard to put into words." The Chiefs started at their own 17 with 4:04 left. Then they were inside the Broncos' 30. But then: poor clock management, questionable play-calling, total confusion. Grbac had moved the Chiefs to a first down at the Denver 28 with about 1:30 remaining. But he had burned two timeouts in the third quarter and Schottenheimer used the final one with 1:51 left after Grbac's 23-yard pass had brought the Chiefs to the 28. He should have had his QB spike the ball. "I thought at that point in time I wanted to make sure we got everything organized and ready to go," Schottenheimer said. Three plays later, the Chiefs were at the 20. On third down, tight end Ted Popson had failed to get out of bounds. The Chiefs faced fourth-and-2. The clock ran down to 30 seconds . . . 25, 20. Grbac had lost communication on his headset two or three plays earlier and was calling his own shots. It was a given he would throw a short sideline route to pick up the first down and then take two shots at the end zone. But he called maximum protection against the blitz. Only wide receivers Andre Rison and Lake Dawson were sent into the pattern. "I wanted to give myself an opportunity," Grbac said. Finally, with 19 seconds left, Grbac took the snap. He threw for Dawson to his left in the end zone, where Darrien Gordon and Steve A****er had him doubled. Gordon easily knocked down the ball and the Chiefs were gone. "I think Andre had a short route but they had (linebacker Bill) Romanowski to that side and the linebackers float to that side," Grbac said. "So, I came back to Lake Dawson." The Broncos were expecting Grbac to go short. "I was really surprised at the end," defensive end Alfred Williams said. "He went for the whole thing when they only needed a couple of yards." Watching Grbac try to pull it out was not easy for Elway. "It was a little nerve-wracking," he said. "But it turned out right, so it's not as nerve-wracking now." K.C. will have a hard time getting over this one. For the second time in three years, the Chiefs were 13-3 and the AFC's No. 1 seed. And again they didn't win a playoff game, despite so many chances. But . . . a 34-yard second quarter field goal by Pete Stoyanovich was taken off the board by a holding call on Greg Manusky, and then he missed from 44. In the fourth quarter, Schottenheimer gambled and failed on a fake field goal with holder Louie Aguilar (the ex-Jet) running rather than allowing an attempt by Stoyanovich, who was 26-of-27 this season and had defeated Denver with a 54-yarder on the last play here in November. In the third quarter, they had to settle for a field goal after officials ruled Tony Gonzalez had come down out of bounds after making a leaping catch in the end zone. Denver scored on two 1-yard runs by Terrell Davis, the second set up by a 43-yard run and catch by ex-Giant Ed McCaffrey. The Chiefs had taken a 10-7 lead on Gonzalez' 12-yard catch late in the third quarter. In the end, Schottenheimer walked towards the locker room, consoled by team president Carl Peterson, and quietly told Peterson that "we can't get over the hump." Asked in his news conference what he would say to people who claim he can't win in the playoffs, the coach said, "I can't argue with them right now." http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/sports/1998/01/05/1998-01-05_broncs_find_elway_to_win_chi.html

I've seen plenty of coaches burn Timeouts in the 3rd quarter before, and yeah calling that timeout that early on was probably not the right thing to do, whats your point? From what I understand from reading it Grabac had 20 or so seconds when he snapped the ball, he didn't have to rush the ball into the endzone. You could still throw it middle of the field, spike it and get another play off or maybe two if you're extremely quick or you could find something by the sidelines, maybe. They were close enough where Grabac could've made a play. He didn't. Games on both.
