The coach selection process

Are the Jets going to interview 5-8 guys before deciding? Is there a not a chance that some of the guys that could be on the top of their list get hired in the mean time? On Sirius NFL Radio they were saying Denver is really high on Spags. Say Marty and Shanahan say no while the Jets are waiting to interview Rex Ryan, their options could really be limited.

I would hope they have a "want" list and not interviewing guys aimlessly. Ok I think my buzz is kicking in, back to the Rose Bowl

They HAVE to interview a certain amount of people as far as I know and they also have to interview minorities... this is what I think I know... if someone wants to look it up...

Also nobody is going to scoop up a coach in the mean time... if a good coach has 3 or 4 teams wanting them... the only way the go to another team before talking with everyone is if they wanted to be there in the first place...

There is no requirement on a # of coaches to interview.

There is a requirement to interview at least 1 minority candidate.

I don't think there is a single candidate, except Shanahan, that if someone else signed him first, I would be upset.

Why the hard on for Shanahan? If the Jets had won one playoff game in 10 years like Shanahan did all Jets fans would be jumping off bridges. The guy was succesful in a different decade, but he is a dinosaur and hasn't done squat since Elway left. I would be pissed if we hired this has been. Sure he won two Super Bowls, but Chuck Noll won 4, let's hire him or better yet, dig up Lombardi's skeleton and put him on the sideline. Mangini won as many games as this fossil over the past 3 years. Please Woody, keep him away from this team.

He's a solid coach who won 2 SB's! all while double duty as GM. Take away the GM and he can concentrate on coaching. He is also very good at grooming young QBs. He is a classic example of someone needing a fresh start, too comfy where he was. Look for him to take a couple of weeks off to get things together and do something that someone doing double duty doesn't do, RELAX! Then he will be hired as HC somewhere (maybe here?) and win his 3rd SB!

Because I want an offensive coach in here that can give us a dynamic offense. He is successful now on offense. What he wasn't successful at was being the GM. Let him have some say, but when he has someone else to talk with, it may help.

You have to be insane to not give Shanahan a call. HOF coach is available and you do not call, then you aren't trying.

It's far more important to get the right person than to do it quickly. The easy way to keep the coach interested is to make it well known that the coach will get higher compensation than from somewhere else if you really are serious about them. They still might sign if they don't think you want them though.

Of course, this franchise has no clue how to properly identify talent, so it won't matter. Marty is probably the best option out there since Cowher is a no go. How have the Chargers and Saints done without Marty? Chargers slinked in at 8-8 and Brees had a great season but still couldn't make the playoffs with the Saints.

I think Marty is really close, really close to winning it all. He's had 2 years to learn from his latest round of mistakes, he saw guys like Dungy and Cowher win it all after failing repeatedly in the postseason. It is definitely part luck, but it's also opening things up and giving yourself the chance to win it. Playing the right situation at the right time, although it is almost always the right choice to attack heavily. The only time you should never attack heavily is when the opponent is playing only to avoid its own mistake and not creating their own opportunities, because in that case rather than finish somebody off who has given up on winning themselves, it'd backfire and cost you. That's a lesson I actually had to learn too since I've always tried to finish with time running out, you figure the other guy has got to start getting desperate but nope, some people just never take initiative when it looks like they have no choice but to.

Ten years, ten. Not 2 ,3 or 4. He hasn't won anything without Elway. Namath and Maynard are in the HOF, but their day has come and gone, it means nothing with regard to what's happening now. His teams have flat out sucked since 1998 and if it wasn't for the SB wins he would have been fired years ago. Can you imagine having a Jets coach win one playoff game in 10 years?? I don't want to hire someone on a false promise of what they have done in the past, unless it is the fairly recent past. The Jets will continue to suck if Shanahan is hired. If not Cowher, then they need to get a solid experienced coordinator who will at least provide more hope than a washed up once upon a time genius.
