Boynton Beach Jets
It sounds like the two best coordinators are Rex Ryan and his aggressive blitzing defense and Steve Spagnuolo and his complex aggressive schemes who does everyone prefer and why? CoachTsurfing
It's almost to the point that I'd take either one. With Cowher and Shanny not even wanting to come in for an interview I'm getting a little nervous.
DMaynard
I would be happy with either. Ryan has the advantage of currently running a 3-4, but I favor Spags a little more because from what I hear his players saying about his leadership qualities, he sounds like he has more HC potential. Plus, I believe Ryan has been turned down a couple of times. Not that you can put too much stock in that, it does make you wonder a bit.

I think Rex Ryan would be a nice choice. Actually I had Cowher as my number 1 candidate by far followed by Spags, Ryan and Marty Schottenheimer
Spudicus
I'd be happy with either one but Ryan's experience overall and in the 3-4 have me leaning his way, I'd also have a little more faith in his ability to pick a staff.

The 3-4 is nice point. I just would hope the next coach will be able to identify what his best attributes of his players are unlike the prior regime and use the best scheme based on what his players are most fitted for. JMJ
I'd be really happy with either but I love that Spagnuolo is an east coast guy born and bred. He was born in Massachussets (Oklahoma for Ryan), made multiple NCAA coaching stops - all but one on the east coast, then he spent 8 years in Philadelphia coaching under Jim Johnson, and he has now spent the last 2 years as DC of the Giants. There would be zero life transition for him and zero "NY transition" for him. That is a huge plus toward helping a guy feel comfortable and allowing him to come in and just hit the ground running. Hell, he wouldn't even have to sell his house and move his family. He can live exactly where he does now just switch team colors.

slats
I hear ya on Ryan, but there's just something bordering the mythical about Giant DC's. They've been becoming top HC's since Tom Laundry. Parcells, Belichick, Fox... I'd hate to miss out on the next one just because of a minor detail like the 3-4 defense.
Boynton Beach Jets
Cool. Still doesn't change a thing about what I said. I think both are very close and either one will be a good choice. Ryan does run the 3-4 which is a minor advantage. Spags coach's in NY and knows the market which is a advantage.

Bugg
Either would do a decent job. Ryan works within the 3-4. Spags keeps loing guys to injury and retirement and yet the Jinst defense is still great. Even with the headache of going back to the 4-3, I go with Spags. But again, there's nothing wrong with Ryan. Barton
The question was regarding which DC we prefer to be head coach of the New York Jets The question says: "Which Defensive Coordinator do you prefer and why?" Nowhere does it say which DC do you prefer to be "head coach". Maybe you dont know the difference between a DC and a HC? Why should you though its not like you've ever played professional sports before.

Barton
I have enough of that by being a Jets fan:p Which begs the question: If balls have been continually busted, making them forever busted, do you still feel it anymore when said balls are busted? 124
Spags. There is a reason Ryan did not get the job in Baltimore and he'll probably be like his Dad was at the Head Coaching ranks.

Irish Jet
I'd take either but I just can't get enough of Rex Ryan's D in Baltimore. They bring all sorts of creative blitzes, line up in all kinds of different ways and he really does get the best out of players talents. It's just organised chaos when Baltimore are playing defense. The fact that he has experience with the 3-4 (Which we are better suited too) helps a ton too. He's the guy I like most but I'd be delighted with Spags either, both have great defensive minds. jetsman
i would say Ryan for 2 reasons 1. He is the son of the best defensive coach i have ever seen. 2. He currently uses a 3-4 in baltimore, why reinvent the wheel when we have the parts to make it work?

I like the idea of a real defensive mind coming to the Jets as head coach. No knock on Mangini he was not an experienced defensive coordinator with New England the aura of Belecheat* was always over him there. Ryan & Spags are both smart defensive minds that make in game changes and change their scheme depending on who we are playing, I would be happy with either.
