WOODY JOHNSON NOT AROUND FOR COACH INTERVIEWS

When the Jets fired Eric Mangini on Monday, owner Woody Johnson said he and G.M. Mike Tannenbaum would quickly start a search for a new coach. The Jets have been busy, interviewing their assistants Bill Callahan and Brian Schottenheimer Friday and Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo today, but Johnson hasn’t been taking part.

Johnson hasn’t been present for any of the interviews because he’s on vacation this week. In today’s Daily News, Gary Myers and Rich Cimini report that Johnson’s absence may have had an effect on their pursuit of Bill Cowher. They spoke to a person “with knowledge of the situation.”

“Bill Cowher easily could’ve been enticed to coach if Woody Johnson would’ve taken a sit-down meeting with him,” the person said. “Cowher’s camp was told that Woody was out of the country and couldn’t have a sit-down with him.”

Adam Schefter reports that he’ll back next week and will start taking part in the process at that point.

JETS, SHANAHAN COULD STILL TALK

Late Friday night, the New York Daily News reported that former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan had snubbed the Jets.

Now, Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Jets reached out (apparently again) to Shanahan’s representative on Saturday.

Per Schefter, Shanahan’s lawyer told the Jets that the coach plans to take two weeks off before considering other opportunities, as Shanahan himself previously told NFL Network.

Schefter says it’s possible that the Jets will speak to Shanahan after the two-week window closes. If, of course, they still have a vacancy at that time.

When Shanahan was fired, a league source opined to us that the Jets would make a run at Shanahan, if for no reason other than to help sell Personal Seat Licenses at their new stadium.

Don't lie.. we all know Cimini played golf with Shanahan then after golf, went to dinner with him, all by the personal invite of Shanahan.

I don't trust anything from pft.com. However, I do believe Adam Schefter. Adam Schefter lives in the Denver area and has very good sources in and around Dove Valley.

PFT.com looks like a Rhodes Scholar compared to Cimini.

Well. it should be easy to find out if Woody is out of the coutry wouldn't you think? And the hell what is being reported about Cowher because only Cowher could answer that one. Don't you think the owner should be around for the talks though?

I would think the owner wouldn't leave the country the day after firing the most vital employee in his one billion dollar asset. But I am old fashioned that way. What a joke.

Reminds me of Terry Suckway going to Disney that one off-season. The Jets are a very family oriented organization apparently. Terry can tele-commute. Woody fires people and leave the country.

That's just swell.

Yeah, but good luck finding out what Cowher is thinking... I think everyone is entitled to a vacation and talks can happen next week.

It's ridiculous to think that Cowher would be upset at Woody for taking a vacation during New Years week.

That aspect of the report is bogus.

as far as shanhan goes.....whatever. if he wants to talk to the jets good. if not, then that's ok too.

Any top coach or executive wants to see commitment by ownership and Woody shown his commitment by being away when a top coach was available to meet him

Thats exactly what I read at the beginning when he was interested in the Jets it was said he wanted to only meet the owner. He wants to see the commitment of ownership and he wanted to speak Woody about final say on personal decisions. Why do you think Bill Parcells or any top football guy has an out in their contract when their is a change in ownership? It is because they want to make sure the new owner is committed to football.

ok...so then he would have waited for woody to get back. bottom line is he decided he didn't want to come here, and that's it. there's no way he said, "i was really interested in the job mike, but since woody is out of the country right now, i don't want to even meet with your team now, ever". it sounds ridiculous. you guys can believe whatever you want, truth is that the jets situation looks like crap and head coaches like cowher and shanahan (who are used to have alot of control) are not going to come in and be forced to take a qb they may not like, an OC they may not like, and give up personnel control to a glorified accountant.

there ya go. as it is right now, tannenbaum is that man. woody's made that apparent by leaving the initial HC interviews up to him. this is why guys like cowher and shanahan aren't coming here....they want all the control, and they aren't getting it here.

It just shows how committed Woody is to football & the Jets. I am sure Cowher did not want this to hang over him for another 2 weeks the way the media was in a frenzy

Woody is just proving his commitment to the New York Jets by vacationing in a crucial time to find a head coach. I guess New Years week is not a good week to push for PSL's.

If the Board fired a CEO of a one billion dollar company and then voted themselves a vacation -- what would the reaction be?

Finish the job.

I like Tanny but Woody owed it to the Jets to talk to Cowher. He needs to look under every rock and make sure there is no stone unturned. Cowher is no assistant coach who is looking to skirt the process this is Bill Cowher who can fix your organization, he deserved the respect.

oh no this is a rumor thread. there isnt suppost to be rumor threads on this board....

I will say this nicely- we have to show some control over this board-we are very leniant-please do not post every single rumor you hear as facts-use some sort of a link to a story. Now continue on in the search for a new Jets coach.
