Garb
You guys are brutal! I thought the coaching staff sucked? If so, doesn't that mean they sucked at putting players in the best position to win? Give Gholsten a little more time before you all lable him a bust. Plus, this is Merrill Hodge were' talking about. C'mon - ever hear his commentary and come away thinking that is one astute football mind? Didn't think so.....

Someone drafted that high and someone who was healthy all year, should have at least been able to rush the passer on obvious passing downs. The guy only had 13 tackles all year and most of those were assists. Something is really screwed up with this kid if the coaches won't even bring him in to rush the passer, his supposed strength in college.
Pragmatic Bus
gholston is a defensive end. you dont need to have great incstincts to get to the QB, for that you need power, speed, explosion, athletisism, and the "first step" all of the things vernon has. mike mayock is way better than merryle hodge
piney
I don't know..many people I talked to (jet fans) were not really thrilled about getting Gholsten, and wanted someone else who would probably have been considered a reach. I remember reading post after post about how he would not be a good football player... why didn't the front office see this? I think they were picking scared, making sure the Pats didn't get him and turn him into a player.

The best part about this is that there were multiple reports saying another part of what did Mangini in this year was his handling of Gholston. Mangini didn't even want to let Gholston on the field, not even as a situational rusher, until he learned all aspects of the 3-4 OLB position. For a guy who has a pretty short football playing career so far, played DE in college and missed the first month of camp, that seems a bit unreasonable. Its amazing that this guy was such a highly touted prospect pretty universally and after his rookie year with multiple reports of being held back by his head coach, everybody is ready to just boot him out of the NFL all together. Seems a little rash, no? I'm not saying he's definitely going to pan out, but to write him off this quickly is just a little much.
