4HCrew
124 just called screaming into my phone. Cowher was interviewed on WFAN and said the Jets never called him. I did not hear the interview but thinking the Jets are looking stupid here.
JiFtheOracle
I dont think we are looking stupid. I think the national media should be ashamed of themselves for all the bull **** they claim to know and we all come to find out is false. This tells me they can either still call him or dont have interest (which would be strange) and then you could say we look stupid.

faba
I blame Woody for a lot of things but my honest opinion is it just all media piling on to blame him because Cowher is not coaching in 2009. Not believable to me.
JMJ
Carton is a big time Jets fan and asked the questions as bluntly as any of us would. "The reports are that you wanted to talk to the Jets and Woody Johnson wasn't available to talk. Is that true?" Cowher says, "You can say that is consistent, yes.". However, he then goes on to say that the only reason his representative and a Jets representative were even on the phone with one another is because the NY media started reporting tons of false stories and things began taking on a life of their own and Cowher's side reached out to the Jets so they actually could talk and bring some closure to it all. That is when he was informed that Woody was out of the country. So in first half summary, it looks like the Jets (for whatever reason) didn't have any interest in Cowher and that is why Woody was out of the country because he had no intention of reaching out to our meeting with Cowher. The two sides only got in contact when Cowher's side reached out due to tons of false media reports discussing discussions btwn the Jets and Cowher that never took place. More coming ... JMJ
Cowher goes on to say that he doesn't really know Mike T or Woody personally but he has the utmost respect for both of them. Craig asks, "Did you ever talk to Mike Tannenbaum?". Cowher replies, "No. He never called." Cowher goes on to say when he retired he had every intention on taking at least 2 yrs off. He says he never wants to slam a door completely though so he was willing to at least talk to any owner who wanted to discuss an opening with them because he didn't want to come off as being smug (exact quote). He says that is why he took the Cleveland call. He was asked if Woody were to call today and say he wanted to discuss the opening with you, would you take the call? He said, "At this point? No. That has passed and I'm very happy with my situation at CBS." More coming ...
JMJ
He was then asked, "Of all the available coaching jobs in the NFL now, which is the best situation for a coach?" He goes on to say why situations in OAK, DET, and STL are no good and says that the Jets is the best job. He says they have a loyal and passionate fan base, an owner willing to spend money to put a quality product on the field (exact quote), and talent that can win. That is pretty much all the main points. Carton goes on to destroy Woody and Tanny for not reaching out saying Cowher was there for the taking. Boomer says how bad he wanted him to coach the jets also but that Carton is acting irrational and only hears what he wanted to hear. I don't fully understand their non interest, but they didn't "blow it.". They never reached out to Cowher and never intended to.

Jetscode1
Bride wanted to get swept off her feet. SMC
Thanks JMJ for the play-by-play. By the way, I don't think that there was a lack of interest on the Jets part for Cowher. I simply think, based on what JMJ wrote, a lack of time. Mangini was fired on Monday, December 29. The Jets had not contacted anyone for an interview yet before there was false stories out there by Cimini, Myers, et al. So by Tuesday night (around 11 pm) on December 30, the Jets put out there that Cowher's agent had declined to talk. Remember this time line: we're talking about only TWO FREAKIN' DAYS!!! SMC
This NY Post Article jibes with Cowher's take: COWHER NEVER TOOK JETS SERIOUSLY By BRIAN COSTELLO As the JetsNew York Jets' coaching search begins its second week, details are beginning to emerge of the team's brief flirtation with Bill Cowher and why there were never substantive talks. According to a league source, Cowher's representatives spoke with the team last Tuesday about the opening. They told Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum that the former Steelers coach was 95 percent sure he was not going to return to coaching. Cowher's reps then told Tannenbaum that Jets owner Woody Johnson should call him, insinuating if Johnson offered an exorbitant amount of money, Cowher might change his mind. Johnson, who was out of the country, felt a phone conversation with Cowher would just be a money grab by the coach. Instead, Cowher's people were informed that he would be happy to meet with Cowher when he returned to the country this week. It was then that Cowher withdrew his name from consideration, something that indicated to the Jets he never had serious interest, anyway. http://www.nypost.com/seven/01062009/sports/jets/cowher_never_took_jets_seriously_147410.htm
JMJ
I've been underground with no blackberry service the past 20 minutes but I did forget one big thing: Carton asked, "Would Brett Favre and his situation have caused any concern for you if you were going to consider the Jets job?" Cowher emphatically replied, "What? Are you kidding me? Nooo! That is part of being a coach and those are situations that come up and you work through. No. That would not have been an issue." RutgersJetFan
Clayton confirmed it this morning, but I think 124 relayed the story wrong to you. Clayton basically said (and this is definite), that Woody went on vacation immediately after firing Mangini, and Cowher was insulted that he wasn't going to be in the interview. To paraphrase, he said that had Woody agreed to be at the interview and shift some things around so that Tannenbaum wouldn't be in charge of all decisions, Cowher would probably be coaching the Jets right now as he was very interested in this job. Thanks Woody.
