FINE SURELY COMING FOR FREENEY

Posted by Mike Florio on January 6, 2009, 2:41 p.m.

Well, when a guy has a $72 million contract, he can afford a $20,000 fine or two.

Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney, after Saturday night

What a whiny bitch?

The Colt grabbed the face mask.

The Colt DLmen grabbed the guy on the collar and swung him around.

And Bill Polian you reap what you sow. You whined about the Patriots and your receiver was called for the very rule you implemented. The irony.

The defensive holding was a solid. Held Chambers before the ball was in the air. I don't think it even matters if the pass went to another receiver altogether (let alone "uncatchable").

Overtime losses are tough for anyone. But nothing stopped Indy from taking care of business in regulation. Friggin' baby.

i didn't like the Defensive holding on the DL and they

didn't call Int grounding on rivers

the facemask was legit, the holding on Jennings i'm not sure anymore, i think

in OT you let the teams play

The defensive holding call was marginal IMO. At that point in a playoff game I think they should let them play. It didn't effect the outcome of the play but it did give SD the game. I have no great love for Indy, but 3 defensive penalties on the opening drive of OT? I agree with Freeney, they got hosed.

One never knows how it affects the play. That's why it's a flat 5 yards. The throw may be different if not for the holding.

And on replay it didn't look that marginal. It wasn't the worst case of holding I've ever seen, but it was a legit call.

This is the NFL, not the NHL!

We all know that a flag can be thrown on every play but if a ref is in position, and sees something, the flags will fly.

In OT you have to be looser, specially when 1 team may not get the ball

The DL grabbed the guy by the collar and swung him around.

If anything, it is a failure on Dungy. It was said during the broadcast, this officiating crew had on average the most penalties called during the game. If the coaches did not say something, that is on them. And you need to give them a reminder throughout the game.

Christ you could call holding on every play...

How ironic, considering how badly the NFL tried to get the Colts to the SB a few years back, especially against the Steelers. I had a roommate that had big money on the Colts, but he was so disgusted at the blatant cheating he began to root against them.

That was a horrible Super Bowl IMO.

what about Int grounding non call??????

I didn't see that, however I do agree with Freeney, the timing of the calls were horrible, but they weren't phantom. Jets have been robbed for years against NE with those types of calls, it sucks....

let em play in OT

Absolutely not.

The game should be called consistently from the opening kickoff to the final play. Whether the calls favor one side of the ball or another, I don't care, as long as the refs are consistent.

I cannot believe the irony of this thread.

Jets fans that wanted Belichick executed and the Patriots disbanded for Spygate when the impact on the actual game is debatable.

Yet they want referees to ignore penalties and allow players to violate rules because a game is in OT.

I'm a little tired of the "let them play" argument.

Maybe they should take the officials off the field after the 2 minute warning and in OT. Let the players call their own. Yeah, that'll work.

A penalty is a penalty no matter when in the game it occurs. The 3 penalties in OT all looked like legitimate penalties to me. We all have the benefit of slow motion replay... all of us except the refs, of course. Try making those calls in real-time with everyone flying around the field and you'll see how difficult it is.
