salary cap issues for pats

Initial reports state that the Patriots are indeed intending to use the franchise tag on Cassel, which would tie up approximately $28-29 million of the $123 million salary cap on two quarterbacks. Add in a $10.5 million salary cap charge for Randy Moss and a $9.7 million salary cap charge for Richard Seymour and you have four players totaling almost $50 million. That would leave $73 million for the rest of the roster, which generally runs counter to the team

New England doesn't need to add any big name Free Agent, unless its an Offensive Lineman. They just need to stay healthy and they will be competitine for the Super Bowl, most likely appearing in yet another one, come February 7th 2010.

With that old defense?

Not so sure.

That is why they drafted Mayo (LB) in the 1st, Wheatley (CB) in the 2nd, Crable (LB) in the 3rd & Wilhite (CB) in the 4th last year.

Crable and Wheatley ended up on IR while Wilhite started the last few games and had 28 tackles after not playing much for most of the season.

The Pats also drafted Merriweather in 2007.

New England needs two Cornerbacks, an ILB and some OLine help. They can address those needs in the first two rounds of the draft and Free Agency.

They will be at worst 13-3 in 2009 if Tom Brady is healthy.

From your mouth to Belichick's ear. A stud LT would be ideal.

Already on the way.

LBers: Everyone knows about Mayo. Gary Guyton played in 14 games and for an undrafted rookie FA did quite well. Vince Redd saw some action late and looks to be following the Pierre Woods model. Make it on SP Teams and earn playing time. Shawn Crable and Bo Ruud were red shirted err IRed this year. My guess, they will get a chance to make the team via SP Team next year or end up cut.

Secondary: Jonathan Wilhite did quiet well. He finished strong after having a horrible game against the Colts and being benched. Mike Richardson (2nd year) and Terreance Wheatley both saw limited action. Sanders and Merriweather are what they are. Good, but not great. I did like seeing Merriweather making more TOs this year which is something the Patriots' D lacks. Big time.

There are rumors that Minnesota might be willing to give up a 1st and 3rd or even a 1st and 2nd to get Cassel.

That would be nice.

Dammit. No matter what, NE seems to get atleast 2 first round picks per year. Good for them, bad for everyone else.

It's not like it's all good fortune. As much as we hate them, no denying that the Patriots are a smart organization.

You do know that the Patriots aren't that old, right? Bruschi, Harrison - older than dirt. Vrable - getting there. Everyone else? Not so much. This "old defense" angle is - well, old. :)

They don't seem to be in cap hell even with Cassel. They aren't $20M under or anything, but they would appear to still be $5-10M under according to Miguel's Pats cap page. They could get an easy $1.5M extra by giving Brady his $3M roster bonus as a signing bonus (or as $1.5M each year for 2009-2010 and guarantee it).

Jarvis Green also counts $5M and is a FA after 2009. They could extend him and lower his number for this year as well.

They do have a bunch of key guys becoming FA's from 2009-2010.

After 2009 season:

Seymour

Faulk

Green

Vrabel

Neal

Wilfork

Hobbs

Mankins

Kaczur

Watson

Gostkowski

Bruschi

Green-Ellis

Guyton

After 2010 season:

Brady

Moss

Light

Maroney

Morris

It's going to take a crapload of cap space to keep most - let alone all - of those guys past 2009. Hell, that's like 3/4 of their starting 22 players becoming UFA's in the next two off-seasons.

Looking at the 2009 list Watson, Bruschi and Green-Ellis are gone. I wouldn't be surprised if Seymour got the axe as well.

how much could they be paying him?

Whatever it is, it's too much. I thank the man for all his superb play and his unmatched passion, intensity and loyalty - but it's OVAH. Retire already. I think he would make a marvelous LB coach for the Pats.

Speaking of CAP. Isn't it the general fear that if the NFLPA does not come to terms with the owners that 2010 will be an uncapped year?

I know they can not guarantee his bonus to get any cap relief because the 2010 season is uncapped. Any guaranteed money Im pretty sure accelerates to 2009. They should be able to do the signing bonus deal since they are pretty smart and structured his salary in way to comply with the 30% rules in the event they had to prorate a new bonus towards the end of his contract.
