i don't remember the storyline of it

but why did we not fire him?

Maybe if you spent less time memorizing every practice squad in the league and more time following the team you would remember these things.

Because Dick Vermeil just knew he would be the perfect coach to takeover for him and his league best offense, lol yeah right. Being a favorite player on your former Eagles team doesnt make you the best coach available.Bet Dick was sick to his stomach the very next season. :D

Because the Chiefs tampered. This was the deal that was brokered by Tagliabue. Probably would have been more, but Bradway didn't have the stones to put the screws to Peterson. Given that we used he pick on Leon, and what we ended up with a round earlier (Schlegel/E.Smith), I'm not terribly upset with the compensation in hindsight.

We didn't outright release him because you don't throw away found money. You put it in your pocket.

Bingo, that's the answer.

Herm had gotten to the playoffs fairly regularly since taking over, and the 4-12 disaster was due to a whole pile of injuries, starting with Chad and stretching to so many other players. The injuries were so bad that it was not a done deal that Herm would get fired, in fact there was sentiment to write off the whole injury-plagued season as beyond the coach's control and move onto next year.

The ironic part was, it was Herm who seened to be dissatisfied with the Jets. Woody seemed to be leaning toward giving him another chance, but apparently Herm had been so busy making contingency plans in case he was fired that one of those plans-rejoin his old friend Peterson in KC-became his Plan A.

Woody no doubt expected a humble coach glad to be able to get another year, but instead ran into a guy who apparently felt he had the right to make demands. In fairness to Herm, he might have figured that if retained by the Jets his position would be so insecure that it would be difficult to maintain his authority in the locker room. At any rate, Woody was not interested in hearing any guff from Edwards on top of a 4-12 season and figured if the Chiefs wanted him, they could have him via deal.

It was 4th round draft choice, and we hit the jackpot with Leon.

Looking back at it now, I wonder if the 4th round pick wasn't some sort of cover for possible tampering. While still the head coach for the Jets, I don't think Edwards could enter into talks about future employment as the head coach of the Chiefs, if in fact that is what he did. I wonder if one of reasons the Jets got a draft pick was to not complain about possible tampering violations and put the matter to rest.

i was just thinking why not trade mangini to the browns

Impossible. Once you put out feelers that your coach is on the trading block, then every team knows you're not bringing him back & they can get him for free in the very near future.

The only way to get draft picks back for a former coach (without the above situation or any tampering on the other team's part) is if Mangini quits with years left on his contract. Then we retain his rights even though we have another HC already in place (or a new HC search already underway). Then for the Browns to get him now they'd have to offer us something. But by firing Mangini, we released him from our contract and he belonged to no one.
