124
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/01/bill_cowher_is_high_on_new_yor.html Bill Cowher is high on New York Jets head coach candidate Russ Grimm by Dave Hutchinson/The Star-Ledger Wednesday January 07, 2009, 9:08 PM Bill Cowher may be a bit biased but he believes Russ Grimm, one of his assistants for eight seasons, has the right stuff to be an NFL head coach. Jets owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum will fly to Arizona Thursday to interview the Cardinals assistant head coach/offensive line coach. "I think he's a guy the players will relate to," Cowher said on WFAN radio on Tuesday. "I think he has a great understanding of the offense and I think he has enough of an understanding of the defensive side." Although the Cardinals are preparing to meet the Carolina Panthers in an NFC Divisional playoff game Saturday night in Charlotte, N.C., coaches from teams who played in last weekend's wild-card games can be interviewed this week at a time and place convenient to that team. Thus, the Jets are flying to Arizona. The Rams are also interested in Grimm but haven't interviewed him yet. In other coaching news, the Browns have hired former Jets coach Eric Mangini as their new head coach and he's eyeing several Jets assistants for his staff, including Bill Callahan and quarterbacks coach Brian Daboll, for the offensive coordinator job. Callahan has interviewed for the Jets head coaching post and is under contract for next season. However, he may feel slighted if he doesn't get the job and may want out. Defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson, defensive line coach Dan Quinn and receivers coach Noel Mazzone may also be in Mangini's sights. Meanwhile, Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan is scheduled to interview with the Rams on Sunday, and he may also speak with the Jets that day, especially if the Ravens win their AFC Divisional playoff game at Tennessee. If Baltimore wins, Sunday will be the only day the Jets can interview Ryan until the Ravens are eliminated. Should they reach the Super Bowl, Ryan could be interviewed during the bye week. Grimm, 49, is a serious candidate for the Jets. Cowher added that in addition to being a player-friendly coach, he feels Grimm will be a good NFL head coach because he has gone through the interview process before. He said Grimm turned down a chance to take the Bears job in 2004 that went to Lovie Smith because he didn't think he was ready. And when Cowher retired in 2007, Grimm was a finalist for the Steelers job, which eventually went to Mike Tomlin. Grimm has spent the past two seasons in Arizona. "I think Russ had a chance to sit back and absorb a lot of things, look at it from a different perspective," said Cowher, referring to how Grimm has gotten the opportunity to see how head coaches deal with the players, media and other aspects of the job. Grimm, a four-time Pro Bowler, played 11 seasons with the Redskins and played in four Super Bowls, winning three. The Jets, seeking a replacement for Mangini, will interview Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks Friday. As of Wednesday, the Jets still hadn't scheduled an interview with former Ravens head coach Brian Billick. Steve Spagnuolo and Jeff Jagodzinski, who was fired by Boston College Wednesday, have also had interviews.

I fail to see how firing Eric Mangini instead of keeping him makes the Jets the joke of the NFL. Over the past month under Mangini's careful eye we weren't exactly the anti-joke. The team talented enough to slaughter the undefeated Titans on the road & then loses to Oakland & Seattle & San Fran & barely squeaks by the Chiefs. Even Denver; the Jets were joined by the Chiefs as the only teams they beat over the last 6 games (and even the Chiefs had a 10-point lead at one point). If Jauron didn't gift-wrap the only possible dumb-luck way the Bills could lose and Mangini went 0-5 instead of 1-4 down the stretch, would that really have made his coaching job any worse? He did enough to warrant his dismissal. He was not the answer. If, somewhere down the road, he somehow becomes some other team's answer, then so be it. Thai Jet
Who cares what Cowher thinks. He had his chance and since he passed he needs to STFU! Cowher's a POS now in my book. He did NOT recommend Grim NOR Wisenhunt when they were his assistants and he was leaving Pittsburgh. Now suddenly Grim's good enough for the Jets according to Cowher? F*** him. Yeah? So are we. Do you think Woody and Mr. T are going to pick a coach based upon what Cowher or JN posters or sportwriters advise? The joke of the NFL is now a toss up between the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions. Despite what some self loathing Jet fans like you feel, the Jets will be fine. That clown isnt a Jet fan DM - he's a Mangini scrotum licker. I took 90 seconds and looked at all the threads he started - everyone of them had Mangini's balls on his chin. Then I saw the one where he was asking directions to the Meadowlands. He's a real Jet fan alright. Good ridance to him

Your team is sucking and they are looking to their leader to get them out of it. When he fails utterly, he goes.
