dbatesman
To all the blame-the-victim Patsie trolls out there (this includes you, Mike Florio): what happened to Eric Mangini being blackballed? I thought he was a snitch, a traitor to the coaching fraternity, a guy who would never be gainfully employed again? I thought his unconscionable betrayal of his friend and mentor would doom him to a life as a college coach, if that? I thought Jets fans were the only ones who thought Spygate was a big deal, and that the rest of the league hated Mangini more than it hated Belichick? Whoops. And for those of you who want to make the joke that taking the Browns job is being blackballed...I'm one step ahead of you.

kelticwizard
dbatesman: A case of mass hypnosis, obviously, with the medium being internet message boards. Somehow Pats fans convinced themselves that because Mangini knew that Belichick cheated on other teams, when Belichick cheated openly on Mangini, Eric was bound by some code of honor to let it go. In the real world, most people would turn in Belichick not just for cheating, but for being so arrogant as to do it after he showed you how he does it. That's like a bank robber sending a letter to a bank announcing how he plans to rob it, then calling "Foul!" when there are ten SWAT teams waiting for him when he shows up. Green DNA
The moral of the story is that the perpetrator of a vile act is always much closer to the gutter than the whistleblower and that's the way it should be in a civilized society. This whole "snitches get stitches" thing is some kind of warped code of honor fabricated by thugs and cheaters so that they can continue to live by different laws than the rest of us. Garb
Dear Gawd, let it go people! Taping from a forbidden area of the field is cheating - I suppose - but fer crissakes, is it really? I understand your anger though. The Jets suck. The Jets seems to always suck. Poor residents of the tri-state area (that's for you, Keltic). But Garb, if you were paying attention instead of posting knee-jerk diversions you would notice that this thread is not about how bad Belichick may or may not be for cheating. It's about all these "you'll never work in this town again" threats issued by the Pats fans against Mangini. About how he is alleged to be universally despised by the entire NFL community for his transgression against Belichick. So what happens? Mangini gets fired after his team collapses the last few games, and he comes up smiling with a new head coaching position in two weeks-in fact the Browns made it obvious they wanted him a couple of days after he got fired. In other words, the snarling, pitbull, threat-spewing Pats fans who alleged to be in the know about how the NFL works turn out to be entirely divorced from reality. But then, we all knew that anyway. Maybe they are the ones that need a reality check...... Perhaps so, but if they do it's because they hired a coach who doesn't get the most out of his players-not because the coach broke some twisted honor code which exists only in the mind of Belichick apologists. When Belichick was busted, I expected the "it's not that bad" defense. What was hilarious was when the Pats fans tried to sneer their way out it, as if anyone who said Belichick was wrong for breaking the rules is a simpleton who needs an education from the Pats fans. Now it's those Pats fans who have been shown not to know anything.

newjakecity
Anybody that beats NE twice out of 3 years has to be good. That doesn't answer the question though. Many of you Pat* fans (along with the Mike Florios, Peter Kings, and Selena Roberts of the world) pretty much looked upon the NFL as a cheap Goodfellas knockoff (i.e. its better to be a criminal than a rat). You can try to trivialize this all you want and say "Oh don't compare this to that, your making a mountain out of a mole hill", but its still the "blame the victim" crap that you all spewed last year. So the question is if the entire NFL thought like you guys thought, why did Mangini land on his feet so quickly?

kelticwizard
Yes. One job was offered almost immediately after Mangini became available, and he jumped on it. Just like anyone else would do. What's your gambit now, you want to argue that unless Mangini can prove he had several coaching opportunities, his hiring proves nothing? Please. When the Pats* were caught, it was said that Mangini would not receive another job offer if he lost his job to the Jets. When he did get hired, well it was only one. If he gets fired from there and gets on as an assistant, the excuse will be "oh well he only got to be coach at three places" and so on and so on. Its similar to how he would claim Mangini was clueless and in over his head when he was with the Jets, but then he became Vince Lombardi reincarnated when he was fired. Come to think about it, that would make him like most Jet fans
SeniorFlaJet
What it boils down to is that forever in football lore the Pats and Belli will always be know as cheaters and they"re accomplishments slightly tarnished. During the Spygate controversies the 1919 black sox scandal was constantly brought up as a similar scandal and we are 10 years away from that being 100 years. No one will ever remember that Mangini was remotely involved in it.

kelticwizard
Blackballing means it is understood by all in the league that nobody is going to hire you for anything. It does not mean that a team might rank you just behind a Super Bowl winning coach with a great winning record for 15 years as a hiring prospect. What did the Pats do, again? To "let go" of wrong acts, such as cheating, is to ignore the problem. Which will indirectly encourage others to follow in that cheating act because not enough attention has been made to stop it in the first place. Which would ultimately lead to a wholly and permanently corrupt NFL, which would ruin the experience for everyone. As if the NFL wasn't corrupt enough as is. yisman
I've been arguing with a Cheats douch on a politics forum. He hates Mangini and blames him for the fact that Belicheat was cheating. He insisted after the spy stuff that Mangini was poison, everyone hates him, that this moron has heard from GMs that they'd never hire Mangini, he'd never get another job anywhere. He was celebrating for days after Mangini was fired. Of course, he immediately gets an interview and gets hired. Big upgrade for the Browns.
