WWHI : Jets intent on rectifying CB-by-numbers calamity

By Matt Sohn - Jan. 8, 2009

Give the Jets credit for this: They did virtually everything in their power to address their glaring deficiency at the cornerback spot opposite emerging star Darrelle Revis. In training camp, they believed that Justin Miller, an athletic dynamo coming off a serious knee injury, had rehabbed to the point that he was the answer. When they soured on him, they moved on to rookie Dwight Lowery, who looked the part early before fading in the second half of the season. They signed former first-round flameout Ahmad Carroll in hopes he could find the light in New York, and they lured back Ty Law for a half-year date. None did much to alleviate the problem, as evidenced by their 29th ranking in pass defense. In response, word we're hearing is that team brass won't be employing a CB-by-numbers approach in '09 and instead will be targeting a single top-flight corner this offseason.

Chris McCallister's going to get cut. Anybody know of a team in desperate need of a vet that can still play the CB position for a reasonable price and with a chip on his shoulder?

And a team whose HC is Rex Ryan (hopefully).

They aren't giving out an Asante Samuel type contract.

Why not, Im not an expert on the cap so I cant speak on such things, however if they are willing to shell out 12 milli for a washed up QB, they should spend some $$$ on the things we really need-- a cornerback opposite Darrelle Revis and another safety. Abram Elam is only good in Blitz situations and Eric SMith... :-|

It's going to be much bigger than that IMO.

Guys like Samuel and Clements set the standard but Asomugha is the best and he knows he's the best. His contract is going to be the biggestin CB history IMO.

YOu don't need 2 pro bowl CB's.

Kelvin you found us, how is it hanging, a little to the left today?

Becuase you can't spend that much money on one position.

How much money can we afford to spend on FA, since we are burdened with this collassal Brett Favre contract?

Told you, I know nothing about caps or how they work.

They are 10 million OVER the cap now. They are gonna have to clear room and even when they do they can't spend like they did last year.

The Jets have big money invested in their No. 1 CB in Revis. It's a mis-use of cap space to spend big money on another CB.

Plus, the NFL is a pass-rushing league. The shut down corner is a thing of the past when CBs could mug WRs. Unfortunately, Mangini forgot about that and tried to resurrect a Patriots system that was made obsolete by the Bill Polian rules.

Revis IS a shutdown CB.

I KNOW. That's why he's getting paid big money. But with the change in the rules, paying 2 of these types of QB is bad caponomics.

Overall, I'm agreeing with you on your points.

Perhaps if they had rushed more than 3 guys, their results would have been better.

Namdi will want more money than we are paying Revis, he will want to start over Revis as the number 1 corner, thats just a straight up insult to Revis who's worked his ass off for the team, just give him a good cover corner on the other side and a pass rush and things will be fine. Even with if we had Bailey, Reed and Polamalu with Revis a QB with time will pick them apart....well maybe not those four but you get the point.

The Jets should just save their money and blitz more with the players they have.

That will help the secondary way more than a single top-flight CB.

+1

A guy like Lowery becomes more than average when only asked to cover his WR for 2-3 seconds as opposed to 5-6 seconds like all our DBs were last year.

Look at the Giants secondary. They're a bunch of bums and were a bunch of bums last year also. A pass rush covers up all holes in a secondary.

Not really. It would be more like #1CB A and #1CB B. I love Revis, in fact he's probably my favorite Jet and the team, but he's not better than Nnamdi Asomugha, not yet anyways and I'm pretty sure Revis (who's not stupid) would be willing to accept how good Nnamdi actually is.

I think they're the 2 best in the league TBH but like others have said it's simply too much money to invest in the CB position regardless of how good they are. If we are going to spend BIG this off-season, then look no further than Albert Haynesworth. If you're going to invest a lot of money in a certain area, do it in the trenches.

Every one is talking about overspending on the CB position, and getting another expensive pass rusher.

The Jets have quite a bit of money tied up in pass rushers.

Thomas, pace, and Gholston

Lot of money there folks

I mentioned Haynesworth who would bring a lot more than just a pass rush.

Seriously, if we're going to sign big this season then that's the guy. He's going to be after big money but with him and Jenkins on the line heck I could get some sacks playing LB. It would be a ridiculous NT/DE or DT pairing whatever the formation may be and like I said, if you're going to invest a lot of money in particular area that's where it should be.

Who knows what the focus of this team will be in the offseason. It is all very dependent upon who takes over.

Hell, it wouldnt suprise me if we got a coach who actually knows how to coach a player to get the most out of them, we mignt need a complete overhaul in the secondary.

Especially if we get an "attack first" D coach. We might actually utilize our D-line and LB's appropriately.

Why not get the best if it's available at a price we can afford?

Why not have the best CB tandem in the league.

If they can afford it I'd be all for signing him. I don't think they can. I think he is about 95% likely to get franchised and 4.99999999999999% likely to be involved in an insane bidding war jacking his contract sky high.

If they let Favre go they are probably in the market for another washed up QB. Maybe they didn't need him when they had Penny around, but they probably need something now.

The Giants DBs really aren't a bunch of bums. If they are then maybe you guys should start questioning Spagnuola's coaching. Ross is a 1st round pick. Webster was a 2nd rounder many expected to go in the first in '05. He was picked before Justin Miller and he was recently converted from WR so it's no suprise that it took some time for him to come around. Many Giants fans think he's their #1. Sam Madison is ancient, but he's been a decent cb for years. They also have Johnson consensus best safety in the '08 draft.
