Cleveland Browns GM search loses another candidate

by Tony Grossi Friday January 09, 2009, 2:39 PM

CLEVELAND -- The hiring of Eric Mangini as Browns coach has eliminated another candidate for general manager. Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay, who was granted permission to interview for the job, has chosen not to.

At the onset of the Browns' search process, McKay was considered a "brand name" candidate to head a reorganization of the team's football operations.

Scott Pioli, New England vice president of personnel, also was in that class, but fell by the wayside when Browns owner Randy Lerner made clear he wanted Mangini as coach.

Thursday, the day Mangini was hired, Philadelphia Eagles General Manager Tom Heckert took himself out of consideration.

During Mangini's fast track through the process, the GM job appeared to be framed for Baltimore pro personnel director George Kokinis, a friend of Mangini's, who is scheduled to be interviewed Sunday.

A source said Kokinis may be leaning toward staying in Baltimore, and that is why the Browns' GM search has been widened.

Former Denver GM Ted Sundquist and Chris Polian, Colts vice president of football operations, may be potential candidates.

The Browns also have interviewed T.J. McCreight for the position. McCreight was player personnel director under former GM Phil Savage.

Lerner has said in interviews that naming a general manager will take a back seat to assembling Mangini's coaching staff. Mangini is poised to officially name Jets quarterbacks coach Brian Daboll offensive coordinator and Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to the same post here.

A source said no members of the Romeo Crennel coaching staff have been interviewed for jobs by Mangini.

Other "brand name" coaches or GM-types who expressed little interest in joining the Browns at this time were Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren and Mike Shanahan.

Thomas honored: Browns left tackle Joe Thomas was named to the second team of the Associated Press All-Pro team, voted on by a panel of 50 sportswriters and broadcasters.

First off, GM's aren't the problem, he could get the best of the best, he could get a blank check and ALL the players he wants for his one scheme he knows! It's when he starts the actual coaching, there the problem lies. LOL

Also, Why The FUCCK couldn't FAT-gini bring HIS GREAT BUDDY, Rob Ryan over in three years!!!! Contract thing?

Raiders wouldnt let him out of his deal. His deal expired this season. I'm hoping he's holding out for Rex to get our job and be the DC.

I don't really think it's a good idea ot have brothers as HC and DC personally.. Rather someone different anyway..

Well if you want the Buddy Ryan/Rex Ryan defense, who else to run it than someone else who learned it from birth?

Not all 31 other teams. Love 'um or hate 'um but that is a pretty successful model in New England.

Belicheck is the GM though.. maybe not in title. That's not what Cleveland wants. They want 2 people with equal power. Belicheck has ultimate power.
