Star-Ledger: Rex Ryan is frontrunner for Jets

Untouchable

Recommended Posts

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Ravens defensive boss Rex Ryan has emerged as the new front runner to be the Jets' next head coach.

The Star-Ledger had Jets OC Brian Schottenheimer as the favorite a week ago and he remains a contender. However, Ryan reportedly met with Jets brass for five hours Sunday and the sides "hit it off in a big way." The Jets could keep Schotteneheimer in place if they hired Ryan. New York would also not have to tweak its defense much because Ryan can run a 3-4 scheme.

"Rex likes the owner," the person said. "He was impressed that the owner flew down to meet with him. The Jets were very serious. I can tell you that Rex is leaning toward the Jets and the Jets are leaning toward Rex.

"In fact, the Jets told Rex that they're prepared to wait until after the Super Bowl to hire him if they have to."

I think Schotty should stay. With the number of veterans this team currently has, you want SOME type of continuity for this team. The last thing you want to do is REBUILD from scratch. THe team was doing well offensively barring that late season collapse and Favre. No one was complaining when the Jets were lighting up for 30 points/game mid-season. Let Schotty keep running the O and have Rex kick our D back into shape.

Some posters say let Ryan (assuming we get him) pick his own staff?

WHY?!?! If it's not broke don't fix it:

Gruden kept Monte Kiffin when he arrived in Tampa

Dungy kept Tom Moore as his OC.

Jon Harbaugh kept Rex Ryan as DC.

KEEP SCHOTTY and let him develop Clemens, Ratty, and Ainge. See who rises.

LOL @ comparing this awful staff that just gagged it up to some of the best assistant coaches in the NFL.

In all fairness to the writer of the article, they have no choice but to wait until his team is eliminated from the playoffs..those are just the rules, not them being courteous.

Well I thought it was going to be Spags. Ryan is more of an out of the box candidate and I didn't think they would go that way. Kind of surprised Rob Ryan wouldn't wait to see what his brother did before taking the DC job in Cleveland. I guess he didn't want to risk being stuck in Oakland any longer.

Yeah, but they could grab anyone else, earlier. The statement, for what it's worth, seems to indicate they are serious about Ryan.

Watch the Jets wait until after the Super Bowl for Rex Ryan and then he ends up taking the Rams job. The RAMS. Ugh.

don't think that EVERY single one of us hadn't already considered this scenario Max...Mike Westhoff might end up being a good HC for the Jets with that cane and crotchety attitude

The Rams might not be as far behind as you might think they do have a better QB situation with Bulger and they have Steven Jackson and young d-lineman in Chris Long.

Bulger sucks. People got to get over this myth that Bulger is a good QB. The guy has only played a full season one time (one less than Chad Pennington) and has only had one really good season so far. He's thrown 28 ints and only 22 TDs the last two years. Bulger is a joke.

Jackson's good but he also can't seem to stay healthy anymore. I know he's young but he's got a lot of mileage for a guy his age. Don't be surprised if the last two years with him breaking down become the norm.

Rex Ryan is a defensive coach who comes from a system where they won with defense and defense alone for a long time. The Jets have a lot more pieces to make his defense work in place than the Rams.

There is no way in hell the Rams job is more attractive, unless they offered 2-3 million more per year than the Jets.

The Rams need at least 3 offensive linemen. Probably more. Pace is always hurt, Jacob Bell was overrated by St. Louis in free agency, Barron just blows & wouldn't be starting if he wasn't drafted so high, and the other 2 are total backup-talent scrubs.

On the DL, they have back-to-back high draft picks invested in Carriker & Long. But they have little else otherwise. Little & Glover are toast & the best option they have beyond them is Victor Suckyanju. Their LB'ers are overpaid and they need a MLB to run their defense. Tye Hill may never be the mediocre player he once was again, and Fakhir Brown is a free agent (as though anyone wants him anyway). Corey Chavous is 100 years old. Atogwe is ok I guess, but he's a free agent also.

Cap it all off with two shell-shocked, former pro bowl QB's, one veteran WR who wants out, and there you have the 2009 St. Louis Rams. That team is a disaster.

I seriously doubt that. By October, Jackson will be injured again. Ditto Pace, which will lead to ditto Bulger being hurt again. And you'll wonder how you could have even though something so silly.

Miami had a bunch of bad breaks last year with no coaching and no QB.

Carolina had a solid OL in place and drafted more. Plus they went from a QB with a TD:INT ratio of 9:17 to 12:7 and added Chris Johnson to replace Chris Brown.

Baltimore had no QB last year. They did have one this year. Also, last year on the OL they had 2 rookies on the OL and another 2nd year player at left tackle after Ogden went down.

These teams had most of their pieces intact and just needed a key player here or there, or had inexperienced talent that just had to get that year of playing time under their belts to make it complete.

Big difference.

He's got to pick his own staff. If he doesn't, he's starting out as a head coach with added tension and resentment that he really won't need.

The only coach I really want to stay is Westoff. Callahan seems to've done a good job. But it's got to be up to the new head coach whether he wants to keep any of these guys or not.

All very true I guess my point which was not very well elaborated by myself is that the Jets are not a slam dunk to get him. I wanted to express that the Rams have some talent not what the Jets have, St. Louis would not be as much pressure as NY and the Rams have built championship caliber teams in the recent history. I guess that is me negative on the Jets because me the Jets fans is numb of disappointment:drown:

I love this notion that coaches choose jobs based on where there is less pressure. Honestly, if a coach has that mentality, I don't want him as my coach at all.

I want a coach, who believes, **** that, I want a coach who knows he will win.

The Jets have 34 personel. The Rams don't.

Agreed. Even though our LB'ers cover like a bunch of old ladies, they don't all have Vilma-size either like the Rams' LB'ers do.

That team is a mess. Weak LB'ers, no CB's, no safeties, need at least 3 OLmen, and their QB/WR situation is only better on paper. Bulger isn't the same QB he was, and Holt is leaving.
