RutgersJetFan
I'm heading out next week for several days to drive up the coast and do some camping/hiking. Any recomendations for stops along the way? Anywhere between LA and San Fran is fair game, but I definitely want to do Big Sur for at least a day or two as well. Verde
I've been to Big Sur a few times and it's just ethereal. One of my favorite spots in the whole country. YOU MUST STOP AT NEPENTHE!!!!! http://www.nepenthebigsur.com/

Otter
I drove out west in the summer of 2001. Drove down Rt 1 from San Francisco to LA. I has a hard time keeping my eyes on the road it was so beautiful. Monterey is a nice town. I enjoyed reading Steinbeck in high school, so it was cool to see where many of his novels were set. There is a nice aquarium there as well. We did the 17 mile drive around Pebble Beach (toll road). Many mansions and golf courses. I didn't bring my clubs, but walked the Pebble Beach golf course. Lots of wildlife to look at (sea lions, sea otters). There are several state campgrounds right off of Rt. 1. Here is a link to the California state parks http://www.parks.ca.gov/. We stayed at a KOA in Santa Margarita which is off of 101. It was a pretty nice campground. I'd stay there again. I didn't do any hiking on the coast. Did that in Yosemite. This time of year it is probably to risky to drive into there. Enjoy your trip. I'd like to go back out there someday.

PFSIKH
check out monterey bay aquarium santa cruz boardwalk I would concur with both of these. Do not know what the weather is like now, but the board walk rocks during the summer.
