GREENFIELD, Calif. - Police have arrested a Greenfield man for allegedly arranging to sell his 14-year-old daughter into marriage in exchange for $16,000, 100 cases of beer and several cases of meat.

Police said they only learned of the deal after Marcelino de Jesus Martinez went to them to get his daughter back because payment wasn't made as promised. The man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of human trafficking.

NBC News' Dara Brown reported that the deal specifically involved 100 cases of Corona beer, 50 cases of Modelo, six bottles of wine, 50 cases of soft drinks and 50 cases of Gatorade.

I am not passing judgement until I know what kind of meat was agreed upon. Prime? Chuck Roast?

Is that enough to last 14 years until he can sell his next daughter?

I have no problem with him selling his daughter, but she shouldnt be forced to marry the new guy.

I used to be surprised by this sort of thing until I learned a simple truth:

People who have no self-respect ***** and have kids too.

When you dont respect yourself, you cant respect any other living creature including your "offspring".

This is a rudimentary form of barter that is occurring on a more complex level in many parts of the world.

Thats why I likes me a drink.

The saddest part is that stories like this make you realize that there's still parts of this country where this is the norm, and women involved in transactions like this are raised to believe that this is the way things are.

arranged marriages and doweries have been a part of just about every culture for thousands of years, and many royal weddings in the european world were arranged with doweries "back in the day"

most cultures have moved on tho

and most fathers get the dowery before handing over the daughter :D

the idea of romantic love being a basis for marriage is very recent

statistics show arranged marriages last longer than romantic ones fwiw

if he was any good, he would have gotten land included in the deal, and livestock, so he could live off of the dowery

rookie

Yeah, because both parties have a vested interest.

Say what you want about San Francisco, but at least they don't have this problem.
