I need new front brake pads and resurfaced rotors.. Pepboys is the cheapest in my area. Anyone have a good or bad xperience with them?

So I basically have to add $150 to my $700 tire endeavor because, apparently, the fairness Gods are on vacation or somethin'.

they're just brakes fer crissakes. who cares if price is right.

sorry I never dealt with them but they seem like a big enough name in the industry. 150 doesn't seem too pricy for the work done but ouch anyways when it is unexpected.

I too hate putting $$$ in cars

Verde, If your planning on keeping the car for several years I would recommend going with a ceramic pad even if their just the entry level ones. A set might be just $15 or so more but they'll last twice as long and won't give you that annoying brake dust on your front wheels. Most of the cost of a brake job is labour. The cheap pads that Poop Boys quoted you only cost them about $13. Also be prepared for the " We can't resurface the rotors since they're too far gone. You'll need new ones" That'll add perhaps $80 or so to the bill. Have your husband bring the car in NOT you since shops like PB prey on pretty girls who are alone. I once put a set of decent brakes on my gf's car. 3 months later she goes to the dealer to have her cruise control fixed. The mechanic does a "free" brake inspection. He tells her, and I quote, "If he loves you at all he won't let you leave here with these brakes" . Luckily she called me in a panic, I told her to tell the mechanic to GF himself and she left. Good luck V.

I realize that $150 is not bad for brakes but add that to the cost of 4 new tires and labor and I'm spending almost $1,000.. bad time of year, right after the holidays.

I am well aware of the gender factor and so my husband will go take the car in.. and if they try to suggest new rotors he'll have to show them the dealer's paper work stating that the car needs the rotors RESURFACED. If the dealer didn't try to scare us into new rotors then the car doesn't need them.

+1

Somewhere around here is my wife's "rusty brake" story. She took the car in for an oil change and the dealer tried to hit her up for a $500 "brake cleaning" because they were "rusty". She called me and I called the dealer. He explained the service which amounted to a pad change without changing the pads. He couldn't explain how year old stainless steel could rust, but didn't hesitate to inform me that "the car was already on the lift and apart". After I asked him "what kind of a clip joint are you running there?" I called my wife and told her to pay with her credit card. She disputed the bill and VW never responded to anything. No charge.

As for Pep Boys, those large chains are usually okay, but you still have to ask around about each particular one. It still boils down to which monkey works on your car that particular day. I'm with Thai on the upgraded pads. The parts are such a small part of the job that you might as well pay for premium stuff. I'm haven't looked around lately, but I didn't used to be that fond of ceramic because they are a little noisier and seem like they have to warm up.

Pep Boys is a perfectly acceptable place to get brakes or any other work done. As usual, Thai Jet is an idiot. Make sure you tell them what the dealer said about the rotors, though. ANY garage will try to sell you new rotors.

Actually, most people NEED new rotors, even if they don't want to admit it. If your dealer says you don't, then you don't.

And as usual Bob you come across as an *** with your comment. :rl:
