NIGHT STALKER
I'm not a jet engine guy, so can someone explain to me why some type of heavy screening material can't be bolted to the front frame of the engine compartment so birds can't be sucked in? It has to do with the slew rate vs. the four-quadrant output of the engines. The added weight of a screen would distort the rise time (i.e. Step Responsibility) too severely. They have to devise some way of dealing with this situation though...they're birds for christ sake.
shawn306
The fact that the plane didn't break up when it hit the water is nothing is short of a miracle. This could have been nothing short of catostrophic. All accounted for and all safe. The pilot and the crew are beyond heroes.

Vicious89x
All this technology nowadays, and they can't solve the f-cking bird scenario. Mount lasers on the engines to terminate all birds on sight. I'm sure this would go over well with PETA.

Panzer Division Marduk
All this technology nowadays, and they can't solve the f-cking bird scenario. I remember reading about some air force had trouble with this, so they painted eyes on the front of their planes to scare away the birds in the area of the airfield. Worked quite well. I thought these fricken birds were bad when they were destroying all the fields around my town. I heard Rep. Schumer talking about addressing this problem now. Its time. I'm flying out to San Fran for a family reunion next week, so they better get shootin.
Irish Jet
Wow. Great job by the pilot. Seriously! I hate flying so much, now that I found that something as simple as a bird can lead to the plane crashing I hate it even more.

I'm also amazed at the rescue workers for NY, just an incredibly efficient response to a crazy scenario. Amazing, simply amazing. BTW, reports are saying he walked up and down the aisle twice before exiting the plane to make sure everyone was safe and off.

The crew from the NY Waterways Ferry are right behind the Pilot in the hero line, IMHO. They were there right away and mobilized their whole fleet. In this weather, it made all the difference to get these folks out of the water immediately. The funny thing is, its as if these folks knew they were in good hands with NYC rescuers...there were dudes standing ankle deep in freezing water on the wings holding their jackets over one arm and clutching their carry-on's in the other! I literally LMAO watching this.

Barton
Why didn't you people tell me? I had to watch it on the news here. WTF? They think birds hit the engines. Birds?? I was on a plane from NY to Miami 3 or 4 years ago, and while on the way back before landing in Miami we were alerted while in the air that birds had caused a disturbance with the plane. We had to circle the area for a half hour (dont know why) I thought nothing of it at the time. Crazy to think about it now, thank God everybody from this flight today is safe. F'ing birds.
