US Airways flight lost power and ended up in the river shortly after takeoff. My god the water must be freezing. Not a lot of details available since it only happend a little over an hour ago.

Thanks. I just posted this About time somebody came through to advise me of the hometown news. They are interviewing passengers and it seems the passengers are okay

Flight 1549, headed to Charlotte, North Carolina, may have experienced a bird strike -- when a bird or flock of birds is sucked into the jet -- according to FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown.

PETA is probably setting up a protest as we speak. Those poor birds.

I'm not a jet engine guy, so can someone explain to me why some type of heavy screening material can't be bolted to the front frame of the engine compartment so birds can't be sucked in?

It has to do with the slew rate vs. the four-quadrant output of the engines. The added weight of a screen would distort the rise time (i.e. Step Responsibility) too severely.

Sounds good to me. They have to devise some way of dealing with this situation though...they're birds for christ sake.

All I'm asking is for some frikkin 747's with some frikkin lasers on top of the frikkin c-ckpits.

lol. Excellent.

I thought these fricken birds were bad when they were destroying all the fields around my town.

I heard Rep. Schumer talking about addressing this problem now.

Its time.

I'm flying out to San Fran for a family reunion next week, so they better get shootin.

Wow.

Great job by the pilot. Seriously! I hate flying so much, now that I found that something as simple as a bird can lead to the plane crashing I hate it even more.

Chesley Sullenberger, f-cking guy saved about 150 lives today. I'm also amazed at the rescue workers for NY, just an incredibly efficient response to a crazy scenario. Amazing, simply amazing.

BTW, reports are saying he walked up and down the aisle twice before exiting the plane to make sure everyone was safe and off.

God bless him and co-pilot

The crew from the NY Waterways Ferry are right behind the Pilot in the hero line, IMHO.

They were there right away and mobilized their whole fleet. In this weather, it made all the difference to get these folks out of the water immediately.

The funny thing is, its as if these folks knew they were in good hands with NYC rescuers...there were dudes standing ankle deep in freezing water on the wings holding their jackets over one arm and clutching their carry-on's in the other!

I literally LMAO watching this.

Why didn't you people tell me? I had to watch it on the news here. WTF? They think birds hit the engines.

Birds?? I was on a plane from NY to Miami 3 or 4 years ago, and while on the way back before landing in Miami we were alerted while in the air that birds had caused a disturbance with the plane. We had to circle the area for a half hour (dont know why)

I thought nothing of it at the time. Crazy to think about it now, thank God everybody from this flight today is safe.

F'ing birds.
