When Does The Coles Contract Saga Begin?

I figure right around March we start to hear the rumors of how he is unhappy and how this is now his 3rd coach with the Jets and this is not what he signed up for. I can only imagine how it will get come April if the Jets draft a wide receiver. They made a huge mistake guaranteeing his contract.

Laveranues approached Gang Green about a contract extension but the Jets were not interested. Coles then began to skip offseason programs,

In all these years, has he ever held out? I don't mean skipping offseason programs-offseason is offseason. I mean not showing up when training camp starts-has he ever done that?

If the answer is no, then where's the problem?

What would his reasoning be for holding out? He's always been signed before training camp. What player signs a contract a month before TC and then holds out when it kicks off?

My point is that there is no problem with Coles. He asks for more money a lot but after a little negotiating, he shows up at training camp at a price the Jets feel they can afford for him.

In a league chock full of problem players whose antics are spread across headlines and TV, I cannot believe all the hand-wringing and discussion about Coles, a non-problem player.

Max wanna start an over/under, i say the date should be april 27

It'll be sooner than that. No way he holds off bitching until after the draft, where the Jets are as likely as anyone to draft another WR.

My guess is it'll be in February. In early March, just after the season officially begins, at the very latest.

No thanks.

Trade him Tampa Bay for a 4th round pick. Gruden loves his receivers.

But, his 7 Mil wouldnt come of the books. Can the Jets afford that big of a hit?

I would rather have a younger draft pick thats less expensive and take a cut in production. Deon Branch type player.

Yes, his $7 million would come off the books on a trade.

It's just like a baseball trade. His new team would assume his guaranteed salary. The salary is on the Jets cap only it they retain him or cut him.

Didnt know that. I thought guarateed salary would treated like signing bonus.

Doesnt that make it more difficult to trade him?

also his 7 million isn't that bad of a cap number for a team to take on. besides it would probably be only for a year, although the team he's traded to, he'd want a new contract

As to the first part, no, guaranteed salary isn't treated like signing bonus. It's like the situation with vested veterans. Vested veterans are veterans who have been in the NFL for a certain amount of years and, as such, are guaranteed their yearly salary if they are on the opening day roster.

Accordingly, many teams cut such a veteran right before the first game and re-sign them right after it so they won't be on the hook for the whole year's salary even if they cut him. If such player is on the opening day roster, they can trade him and the new team assumes the salary.

As to the second part, it would be more difficult to trade him, but no different than when the Jets traded for Favre. Favre was to make $12 million in 2008. Thus, the Jets had to assume that salary. In fact, Favre is a vested veteran and since he was on the opening day roster if the Jets had cut him in week 2 (besides the whole side agreement with the Packers for the 2 extra 1st rounders), the Jets would have been on the hook for the full $12 million.

So, in a nutshell, the new team will either have to assume Coles $7 million obligation, or make a new contract with him.

I think the worst part is that there is no viable alternative on the free agent market. We're not going to be be big players for Housh I don't think, and don't like the idea of giving a WR on the wrong side of 30 big money anyway. Gonna have to stick with LC for one more year, hopefully we take a big deep threat early in the draft, and he's ready in '10.

I thought the NFL didnt have Guaranteed contracts?

They don't, unless the team chooses to guarentee it. Coles was guarenteed his final two seasons ($11 million total) by the Jets last summer so he would stop talking about wanting a new contract.

With all the talk of who will still be with the Jets next season, wide receiver Laveranues Coles refused to address his future after the Jets' 24-17 loss to the Dolphins.

Coles, who lobbied for a new contract last offseason and was instead guaranteed the final two years of his contract at $11 million, still wants a long-term deal and he'll likely talk to the club in the coming weeks.

"That's not something that prudent now," said Coles, who had four catches for 88 yards and a touchdown Sunday. "We just lost a ballgame."

Coles, a ninth-year pro, was promised by the organization that it would revisit his contract following the season if he stayed quiet and stayed healthy. He did both.

Coles finished with 70 catches for 850 yards and seven touchdowns. He was second to wideout Jerricho Cotchery (71-858-5) in receptions and yardage.

And, according to someone close to him, he played nearly the entire season with a torn left quad muscle. That person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he's not authorized to speak for Coles or the Jets.

Coles has always been one of those receivers that defied elite because you can't fake being 6'4". He is a tough SOB, though, so let's be fair.

As much as he resented Pennington being shipped out, Chad used to get him killed in the end. I reckon the locker room is all about alliances and chemistry before you step one foot on the field in the NFL.

Coles isn't any more or less 'weird' than John Riggins...but he should just shaddup at this point and enjoy his creepy mansion.
