uart
... for the first time in about a year. I totally lost my finger callouses. They hurt like a biotch. I was psyched when I remembered how to play Purple Haze. I still have a lot of re-educating myself to do, but at least I am back on track. Anyone else play now or at some point in the past? EDIT: And just so that everyone knows how bad it is that I haven't played in that long... I own three guitars and a bass (one acoustic, two electric). I blame law school. How long have you been playing for? I bought my first guitar and started learning in 2002. I was never great, but I used to be pretty serviceable. I bought the bass in, I think, 2004 -- when I realized that among my friends we were one bass short of a band. We never really got the band started, but it was fun for a while. We wanted to play the Funk, but I had too much trouble with Parliament bass lines -- Rick James is a little easier.

uart
Is it weird that I only use my three fingers, unless I am playing a chord that requires four? What if I told you that I use four fingers when I play my Bass?

Borgoguy
Keep playing your acoustic, as it will get your fingers in shape faster. I played electric bass (Fender Precision) all through high school, but quit after sophomore year in college. Since then--on and off--I have been hacking away on guitar. I own an old acoustic made by Norman Guitars of Canada (I lost a sweet 60s era Martin to a breakup with a girlfriend in grad school) and my electric is a Michael Kelly Patriot Custom. My current amp is a 30 watt Line 6 Spider III. Good luck with your playing.
vanDoug
Is it weird that I only use my three fingers, unless I am playing a chord that requires four? I'm assuming it's your pinky that's not being used in riffs. Try to correct this, it will make you a better player. Look at it this way. The frets are basically a finger space apart. Take advantage of that. Even try bending notes with your pinky, maybe supporting that bend with your 2nd and 3rd fingers.

My acoustic was built by Rogue. It was dirt cheap, bought from a catalog. It actually sounds (and looks) pretty good though. My two electrics are an Epiphone Les Paul Jr. and my beloved Fender Stratocaster. I love my Strat too much to F with it, but I have intended to install a new pickup in the LPJr since I bought the thing. Never got around to it though. My bass is a Squire P-bass, but it has a J Bass pickup at the bridge as well. Amp-wise I have a small Fender practice amp that's down here in GA with me, and a larger Line6 flextone amp. As you can tell, I've invested waaay too much in this to not dive back in.
SoFlaJets
so many people talk to me about wanting to play guitar and I always tell them the same thing; DON'T QUIT!!! The natural thing most people do is give up, and I always say if you can keep on playing past 6 months you can learn. What Doug said is 100% right-use that pinkie. A great song to work on is Led Zeppelin's Thank You which starts with a "D" chord. Keeping your ring finger on the D note on the second string drop your middle finger down to the C note on the 5th string and then the pointer down one more fret to the B note also on that 5th string. If you learn that you can learn guitar Does that make any sense?
Jetlag
Awesome uart! It definitely can get hard occasionally to find time to play/practice but if you always come back it's all worth it. In fact, I think I'm about to do that right now.
