Circuit City to liquidate remaining US stores

Circuit City and liquidators to sell off merchandise in remaining 567 US stores

Circuit City Stores Inc., the nation's second-biggest consumer electronics retailer, reached an agreement with liquidators on Friday to sell the merchandise in its 567 U.S. stores after failing to find a buyer or a refinancing deal.

The company, which employs more than 30,000 employees, said in court papers it has appointed Great American Group LLC, Hudson Capital Partners LLC, SB Capital Group LLC and Tiger Capital Group LLC as liquidators.

Calls to the Richmond, Va.-based company and the liquidators were not immediately returned.

Circuit City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November as vendors started to restrict the flow of merchandise ahead of the busy holiday shopping season.

It had been exploring strategic alternatives since May, when it opened its books to Blockbuster Inc. The Dallas-based movie-rental chain made a takeover bid of more than $1 billion with plans to create a 9,300-store chain to sell electronic gadgets and rent movies and games. Blockbuster withdrew the bid in July because of market conditions.

Circuit City, which said it had $3.4 billion in assets and $2.32 billion in liabilities as of Aug. 31, said in its initial filings that it planned to emerge from court protection in the first half of this year.

Under court protection, Circuit City has broken 150 leases at locations where it no longer operates stores. The company already closed 155 stores in the U.S. in November and December.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Huennekens had given the company permission to liquidate if a buyout was not achieved.

Great to see more of my federal tax dollars being pissed away.

bright futures (pays for 100% tuition) is funded by the florida lottery. :) on top of that, i get UCF academic grants...which are great because they help me out with books and rent. but i do get leftover money...

hey, at least i earned it...i'm not completely pissing away your tax dollars. :)

LOL just giving you a rash of crap. My brother went to FSU after HS in Boca and got his school paid for by the same scholarship. We here in Michigan would LOVE to have someone from Florida show the idiots in our state government that scholarship system. Our state "claims" all the lottery money goes to the schools, yet mysteriously, 0 of it translates into any type of college scholarships or tuition assistance.

Another shining reason why the State of Michigan is an absolute cess pool.

So what your saying is that dumb people can get educational scholarships in FLA?;)

I know nothing about scholarship money. I received a scholarship upon graduating from hs. I was not smart enough, poor enough or savvy enough to get another - ever. If the FLA system is that progressive - good for them! Investing in the future is a good idea. I think every state should take notice. I agree GOB.

Heh I bet the booze was cheap though:D

We weren't allowed to drink booze in Bosnia or Kosovo, so with the exception of a R&R trip to Budapest, Hungary and a few trips to the ISB in Taszar, Hungary, it was a dry 7 1/2 months in Bosnia.

As for Germany, back in the golden days of $1 to DM 1.70, it was the grandest of times.

there's one still open in orlando....hell yes. i'm gonna go shopping today.

Actually, the word is all sales currently going on are to be stopped and prices will be jacked back to msrp, which would be a LOT MORE than the street price you would find at best buy or other electronics stores. As of right now there will be no deals. I am sure they will hire a firm that specializes in liquidations, don't expect to see huge deals until the scraps right at the very end.

They have three liquidizing firms chosen already, so yeah, the sales aren't going to be anything notable.

That's pretty much what happened with the store near me.

When it reaches the 50% off or lower you're really in the dregs of the merchandise.

I feel sorry for the workers, but honestly, this is one company that I'm happy as hell for the fact that they've gone out of business. I've bought items from them in several states, and every time I've recieved the same level of sh-tty customer service. The worst, really. Perhaps if they kept their stores organized and actually demanded that their employees deal with customers properly, they'd be able to stay afloat like other retailers are. F-ck Circuit City. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Poor customer service and high prices. It's not like this is a surprising development, they were a very poorly run business that deserved to fail.
