Another potential roadblock between the Jets and Rex Ryan fell today when the Rams hired Steve Spagnuolo as head coach.

The Rams were the only team other than the Jets New York Jets t.gif seriously interested in Ryan as a head-coaching candidate. The Rams and the Jets both interviewed the Ravens defensive coordinator last Sunday in Baltimore.

Now that the Rams went with Spagnuolo, the Jets are Ryan's only suitor. If the Ravens lose to Pittsburgh in today's AFC Championship Game, expect Ryan to get an offer from the Jets as early as tomorrow.

Spagnuolo went from an early favorite to an afterthought quickly with the Jets. He did not overwhelm the team during his Jan. 3 interview, and his background with the 4-3 defense made him less attractive to the Jets than Ryan, who is a proponent of the 3-4.

Eric Mangini spent the last three years tailoring the Jets' personnel to play the 3-4, making a switch back to a 4-3 a step backward for the team.

It became clear this week the Jets were not interested in hiring Spagnuolo. Once the Giants New York Giants t.gif lost last Sunday, any team was free to make Spagnuolo an offer. When the Jets didn't, it was apparent they were leaning toward Ryan.

Jets owner Woody Johnson did meet with Spagnuolo in Manhattan on Tuesday, but that seemed more like a formality than a true second interview. Johnson was out of the country when Spagnuolo first interviewed with the team.

There figures to be plenty of Steelers fans at Jets headquarters today. If the Ravens win, the team must wait another two weeks until after the Super Bowl before they can hire Ryan.

The Jets have concentrated on finding a new head coach since firing Mangini on Dec. 29, but another league development may have caught their eye today.

Julius Peppers asked out of Carolina today. The 28-year-old defensive end will become a free agent unless the Panthers apply the franchise tag to him. Peppers reportedly wants to play in a 3-4. If he were to land with the Jets, he would be the defensive impact player the team needs.

However, it would take some salary cap creativity from Mike Tannenbaum to make it happen. Currently, the Jets are believed to be about $10 million over the cap for 2009.

Just sign this beast already. LOL

Seriously I for one look forward to the Rex Ryan era if it does indeed pan out. I'm not prepared to guarantee anything, you never can with a first time HC BUT I think he'll be a very good one. He has a great defensive mind and I can't wait to see the impact it will have on our defense where there actually is some fair talent to work with.

I was called "pathetic" because Im not blindly co-signing the rest of the Ryan lovers on here. Since when has having a dissenting opinion pathetic?

No. Giving up on the guy is pathetic. Not liking the guy and giving up on him are pretty different things completely.

I didnt give up on the guy. It is MY OPINION that Spags is a better candidate. That is all. Im not in love with this choice like the rest of you seem to be, but I will gladly eat crow if we somehow make the playoffs next year.

Having better talent makes you a worse coach? I didn't know that. We should look for the ****tiest coach going.

no. rob ryan has done more with less and rex has the most talented defense in the league when healthy

do you realy wanna compare the oakland raiders and the ravens. please spare me the energy

i clearly remember u bieng completely up rob's ass last year

Yeah, before I knew anything about him.

Why did I like Rob? Because I was deluded into thinking he must be good because he's a Ryan, son of Buddy and brother of Rex. Then when you watch the Raiders D it was pretty apparent that was not the case.

I think they are both excellent coaches. I also think there is no way to judge how either will adjust to being the head guy. FWIW, the Rams were supposedly favoring Ryan over Spags. They didn't want to wait and lose out to the Jets and be left without Spagnuolo. He also allegedly took a fairly low contract. $11M over 4 years, which isn't much more than he made as DC of the Giants. Rams fans are already nervous about limiting their OC choices to guys willing to take less money that that for the job.

You talk as though the Raiders have nothing on defense. They have Burgess on the D-line, two of the best LB's in the league with Howard and Morrison and the best CB in the NFL in Nnamdi. Do they have the talent of the Ravens? No but they do have talent and it wasn't being utilized well under Ryan at all!

Bronzey. When you post stuff like "bring on the fail" and "we're so gonna suck next season" it really does give out the impression that yes you are giving up on Ryan. I have no problem with people disagreeing with me, I respect the opinion that Ryan could be a failure but to preach it like it's fact already is total nonsense.

It's funny, day in and day out there are weirdos on here that add nothing to the discussion but negativity and BS, yet when I do it I get cursed out by not 1 but 5 people or called "retarded" like JETSVOICEOFREASON has called me.

wtfever, he wasnt my personal choice so that makes me whiny?

no, I have no problem with anyone thinking another coach is better. No one knows if the next coach will be any good. But, you keep saying the Jets WILL fail because of a certain coach. And you have said it in other threads.

That makes you whiney.
