Jetfan13
Wed, 21 Jan 2009 11:05:52 -0800 Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan plans to hire Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese as the team's offensive coordinator if he is not able to retain current offensive coordinator Brian
SMC
Who? Adam Schefter is usually right, but why would Rex go that route? I would think Callahan would be the fallback position.

SMC
I would think you go with guys who you feel you can best work AND communicate with SMC SFJ, do you know of any connection between Zampese and Rex? I don't think they ever worked together. I know Hue Jackson (Ravens QB coach) has been rumored to be the new OC and that makes sense because of his connection to Rex. But this one doesn't. kelticwizard
I wonder....did their fathers work together? I am assuming Ken's father is Ernie Zampese.

Ernie Zampese's kid. Sounds like a decent hire to me. He's been interviewing for years. According to KFFL, he's interviewed with the Dolphins, Panthers, Rams and Niners over the last couple of years. I know he was with the Rams under Martz. Strange thing is that he seems more of a pass first guy- Rams/Bengals and Rex is saying he wants to be "weather-proof". Most people were expecting Hue Jackson if Schotty left.

Everybody knows what everybody else is doing and who's available at any given time. It's like a clubhouse it seems to me-they all pretty much talk to each other (with a few exceptions I'm sure-like us and New England). How many guys are there allowed in the fort really-32 teams-like 400 slots?

#27TheDominator
Rex seems to be fond of sons of coaches.. Well... if you could put Air Coryell together with the 46 D you would have a pretty formidable team.
Irish Jet
I'd be happy enough with Zampese although I was expecting us to go after Hue Jackson who did a fantastic job with Joe Flacco last season.
JMJ
Ryan has coached against the Bengals twice a year, every year for 10 straight seasons now. He must admire the way the Bengals' QBs are prepared whenever he is game planning or reviewing tape of them. Not guaranteeing this is the reason why, but it makes sense on some levels. slats
I'd be happy enough with Zampese although I was expecting us to go after Hue Jackson who did a fantastic job with Joe Flacco last season. NFL rules state that teams don't have to give permission for anyone to hire away their assistants for any position other than head coach. It used to be for any promotion, but it was changed a few years back when the assistant coaches got a new overall contract (benefits, retirement - I don't remember) and in turn they gave up some freedom of movement. So the Ravens might've told Rex that he could pinch one coach, and he chose Pettine. Which is fine by me. We needed wholesale changes in coaching the defensive side of the ball. On offense, I think it's more about talent (or a lack thereof). With Rex focusing on that side, I'd prefer a seasoned OC. In fact, I'm kinda finding myself hoping that Schottie stays, and Rex plugs an up & comer he likes in as a position coach under him - someone who'll be ready to take the reins in 2010.
