THE PROG ROCK THREAD

Borgoguy

Recommended Posts

In conjunction with a consortium led by Jetlag, I am hereby launching the Progressive Rock Thread. Please list your favorite artists, and tunes, from this genre. I will start with keyboard wizard, Rick Wakeman, who dazzled us all in Yes, but had a spectacular run as a solo artist with such albums as The Six Wives of Henry VIII and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Here is a live cut of Merlin, The Magician:

If I Had the Time

(From the album, Sweet Freedom)

3vFPXUvXFVQ

If I had the time

To re-live my life

I dont think I'd care

To change a thing

As long as I find

Just a little peace of mind

I can dream and laugh

And I can sing

I can have my fun

With the silver stars

I can watch the sun

Fall in the sea

And if it rains

I will smile just the same

For the rain

Will make the flowers sing

I know how it is to feel sad

I know how it is when things go bad

But I'm sure that

I have found the way

I'm happy here and here I'll stay

Here I'll stay

I actually had the pleasure of meeting Rick Wakeman back in 86 after playing a club in Bay Shore NY -- The story is long but the experience was one that has stayed with me all my life - He was a quiet man about 5ft 7 in tall and did not act snobby at all. alway one of my favorite keyboard players --

The quintessential prog rock album is Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis.

Some of my all time faves:

Hawkwind; Warriors on the edge of time

King Crimson; Starless and bible black

Pink Floyd; Animals

Rush; Permanent waves

Newer prog rockers that OrangeJet turned me onto:

IQ, Porcupine Dream, Spocks Beard, Echylon...

Xanadu

YMUPQaIgquQ

"Xanadu"

'To seek the sacred river Alph

To walk the caves of ice

To break my fast on honeydew

And drink the milk of Paradise...'

I had heard the whispered tales of immortality

The deepest mystery

From an ancient book I took a clue

I scaled the frozen mountain tops of eastern lands unknown

Time and Man alone

Searching for the lost Xanadu

Xanadu...

To stand within the Pleasure Dome

Decreed by Kubla Khan

To taste anew the fruits of life

The last immortal man

To find the sacred river Alph

To walk the caves of ice

Oh, I will dine on honeydew

And drink the milk of Paradise

A thousand years have come and gone but time has passed me by

Stars stopped in the sky

Frozen in an everlasting view

Waiting for the world to end, weary of the night

Praying for the light

Prison of the lost

Xanadu

Xanadu...

Held within the Pleasure Dome

Decreed by Kubla Khan

To taste my bitter triumph

As a mad immortal man

Nevermore shall I return

Escape these caves of ice

For I have dined on honeydew

And drunk the milk of Paradise

I feel obligated to throw this in here. It's more electronic prog but anyone with an open mind to music especially prog should enjoy it. This is my favorite song off of what is already being called the album of 2009 in the underground/indy music world.

The first 50 seconds are NOT the song, just some intro from the sponsors of the concert.

The album is Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective if you're interested.

July Morning (From Look at Yourself.)

PcyH49_J1wc

There I was on a july morning

Looking for love

With the strength

Of a new day dawning

And the beautiful sun

At the sound

Of the first bird singing

I was leaving for home

With the storm

And the night behind me

And a road of my own

With the day came the resolution

Ill be looking for you

La la la la

I was looking for love

In the strangest places

Wasnt a stone

That I left unturned

Must have tried more

Than a thousand faces

But not one was aware

Of the fire that burned

In my heart, in my mind, in my soul

La la la la

There I was on a july morning

I was looking for love

With the strength

Of a new day dawning

And the beautiful sun

And at the sound

Of the first bird singing

I was leaving for home

With the storm

And the night behind me

Yeah, and a road of my own

Very interesting that you bring up Kraftwerk because I've read many times that they're sort of the grandfathers to a lot of the electronic indy stuff that has been coming out the last few years. I've been meaning to check them out. Is all of their stuff that repetitive?

Pretty much, yeah.

Try some Tangerine Dream! Much better IMO

It's not all that basic, but strict adherence to robotic riffs is their hallmark. They could be melodic in spots.

I would argue that Vangelis kicks a$$ on them both. His iconic album Albedo 0.39 still floors me, especially given that it was created in 1976.

While we're talking electronic. Here's my favorite song of the BEST album of 2008. It is a must listen, IMO. The name of the band is Cut Copy and the album is In Ghost Colours. It's one of those albums where the songs kind of bleed into each other, really well put together and complete.

Cut Copy ~ Nobody Lost, Nobody Found
