COULD 49ERS GIVE MICHAEL VICK A HOME?

Posted by Josh Alper on January 23, 2009, 8:13 p.m.

On our post about Dan Reeves interviewing with the 49ers, a commenter posited that Reeves going to San Francisco equaled Michael Vick going to San Francisco. It makes some sense, Reeves was the Falcons coach when they traded with the Chargers to make Vick the first overall pick in the 2001 draft and the 49ers aren

Pitbulls aren't illegal here. They are really common. IDK if I'm ready for Mike Vick + Jets yet.

I guess Miami then but I lived in Miami and there ****ing pits every where even though they're illegal to own. He would also be sick running the wildcat O. As far as him being on the Jets I not sure, it would be fun to watch if he could still do the stuff he did but he's 29 now I think and with his style youth is key.

Maybe it's just me, but first off, Michael Vick is NOT an NFL QB. If a team decides to sign him (and I hope it ain't us Jets), he should be put somewhere like WR, DB or return specialist. Doesn't his failures as a starting QB and the failures of similar QBs (T. Jackson, V. Young, pretty soon Tim Tebow - bet on it) ring an alarm to any of the NFL personnel heads about these so-called "athletic" QBs. Randall Cunningham, these guys ain't.

Secondly, while he may not be anywhere near Montana and Young, I happen to think Shaun Hill can be developed into a pretty decent QB. He looked pretty good against us (I know that's not saying much), played relatively well in a losing effort to the Cards on Monday night (he did get them into position to win that game), and he quarterbacked them to a 5-2 record to help them finish at 7-9. Given that they were 2-7 after 9 games, that's a pretty encouraging final record. Also, he did start 3 games in 2007, finished with a 2-0 record (guess he didn't finish one of them), and put up good numbers for 3 starts. Also, he pulled off a Steve Young like run in a game this past season that won my admiration. Oh, and here's a link to his stats, They look pretty good to me. Signing Vick to be their QB would be silly.

Cunningham is the only QB I would compare to Vick. The other you mentioned haven't played in NFL or played long enough and they don't run no where near as good as Vick.

I see your point, but at the end of the day, it's all moot when you realize they all suck as NFL QBs. I don't need another 3 or 4 years of watching Jackson or Young (or anymore of Vick for that matter) to confirm those guys are all terrible QBs.

Vick = Wide Receiver

So true. Unless these "running/athlete" QBs in college develop into pocket passers in the NFL, they won't be good QBs. Granted, Young was a scrambler, so was Cunningham, and even the young Elway and Montana had scrambling ability, but eventually, they all became legitimate pocket threats and thus, very good to great QBs. This current group, with all the ESPN hype about "electrifying and revolutionary QB skills" either are unwilling to convert or just don't have it in them. And it's ugly to watch them as well.

If Tebow comes in with Donovan McNabb's attitude, he has the talent to make himself a great NFL QB.

In fact, I think Philly would be the perfect landing spot for Tebow if McNabb is still there.

He can learn from a guy with similar physical skills who can mentor him for a few years and groom him to take over.

McNabb used to be like that. He converted. Look how often he got hurt without tucking & running 5-6 times per game. Still not accurate enough to be considered a great QB, but he's a hell of a lot better than most guys who were drafted as "running" QB's or QB's who can "do it all" or are going to "revolutionize the position" like no one before.

A QB needs to pass the ball.

Thanks for throwing McNabb out there. I always forget his name when talking about running QBs who were able to refine themselves as a pocket QB. He's had a damn good career as an NFL QB (regardless of critics), and still can run, but not as option 2 before he goes through his reads.

And if Tebow (or any of these types of QBs) can learn the game from the pocket and become true pocket threats, I suspect that they'll "magically" turn into good QBs as well. So i agree with you on that one.

Vick deserves another chance. I'm sorry, but it was DOGS. Yes, it's pretty damn sick what he did, but there were no people shot or bounties placed on heads a la Pacman. If Goodell doesn't allow Vick to return to the NFL, it's just another taint on the legacy of the most hypocritical Commissioner in professional sports. The way offenses are changing actually make Vick's skill set a higher premium after the initial successes of the Wildcat variations. The only question in my mind on Vick is if he still is that athlete that people thought would be the Jordan of the NFL. Do I want Vick to be a Jet? No. Do I believe in second chances, yes.

If the NFL can make money off of Michael Vick's return, he will be reinstated.

Yes. Vick was a good athlete who was not used correctly in Atlanta. Mike Vick is not a WCO QB like Mora tried to make him. Maybe the Wildcat formation is just a one time fad, but someone that athletic not being in the NFL is a waste. Maybe he is a scumbag, but when evaluating Vick, his running ability was the x factor that got ATL to the NFC Championship game. I'm not guaranteeing he's still a quality NFL player, but he deserves another chance.
