SouthernJet
Mickey Rourke and Marissa Tomei provide one of the more profound and soul searching looks into the realization of mortality and the ramifications of priorities. Rourke plays once famous The Ram, Pro wrestler. Itrs been 20 uyears and he is relegated to VFW halls now for pocket change. Tomei is his only link to teh non wrestling world as a stripper in a local bar. So as not to spoil, circumstances make him reach out to a daughter he long ago abandoned in favor of the wrestling fame. Its Rourke now who wants cpompanionship in Tomei and daughter as his wrestlings seem numbered. The decisions all three have to make is the pivotal point of movie and is what make sus understand the ultimate friality and coldness that each might possess. Its acant miss..Rourke will battle Penn for Best actor. 4 's

Alk
We just decided out of the blue to go catch this at the art cinema tonight. I have to say that this movie far exceeded any expectations I had and I went into it with some pretty lofty expectations. What a freakin' incredible movie. I don't see how anyone couldn't enjoy this one. It has everything. Even if you're just a run of the mill wrestling fanatic, you'll love it. But make no mistake that was just a miniscule part to this movie. Fantastic!!

Alk
***SPOILER*** So SJ, what do you think happened to Randy the Ram at the end? I just immediately assumed that he died but my wife wanted to believe he lived. That was the only thing that pissed me off about the whole movie. slats
**Spoiler** So SJ, what do you think happened to Randy the Ram at the end? I just immediately assumed that he died but my wife wanted to believe he lived. That was the only thing that pissed me off about the whole movie. I don't think it mattered. He didn't have to die on screen because at that point his life was already over. He ran out of chances with his daughter, and lost his chance with Tomei. However long his heart might've held out, it was empty. And yeah, I thought it was great, too. I was actually pissed when Sean Penn won the Best Actor Oscar over him, and I never give a crap about that stuff. Mickey nailed that role.

SouthernJet
Agreed. I haven't seen Milk but I gotta believe that it came down to the fact that Penn is Hollywood's golden boy. actually I thought both performances real close...both GREAT..ALK, the Indie expert u now are, when u see Milk ,u will agree Penn was great.. as far as awards,,rourke won most of the major awards except Oscars.. Oscars is heavily 'in the business' oreinted as far as voting..this favors his gay character and content as Hollywood very gay friendly,,I think it helped, but I had no issue as I thought he was great.. Non Oscar awards were more press/reviewer and fan based.....
Morrissey
Penn deserved to win, he was far more dynamic in his role than Rourke was. The Wrestler was a good movie, but it wasn't great. Milk was better IMO, as was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Slum Dog Millionaire.
